In this weekend's box office hit, Matt Damon plays an astronaut stranded on Mars after his crew is hit by a sandstorm. But is the drama realistic about science? Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss what the movie got right and wrong.

Gotta say, the man is clearly over-excited about this film (and book). Well, I can see why. This is pretty much one of the VERY few movies where it depicts scientists and astronauts (not on individual level, but as a whole NASA and everyone involved) as cool and awesome protagonists, and at the same time, got the actual science right. Truly awesome.

The host are absolutely clueless about what he’s talking but also intrigued or curious to hear what he says

Having taken advanced molecular biology and genetics myself all I can say is, I wish the professors tried more to explain the grand design in this way. So much of science is just memorizing how things have been known to work and not what we can inevitably do with what we end up learning. Such a shame really.

I was very impressed with the Scientific-accuracy of this movie.
Have to give the producers a lot of credit for utilizing the information that we have gained over the last 50 years. The only fault that I could possibly make, would be the terrifying “capture“ in space. Although this was scientifically reasonable, it was highly unlikely to co-ordinate a manual Mars launch into space to catch up to an incoming spacecraft that was NOT in orbit. But this was not a problem for me, because all dramas based on facts are given, “license” for dramatic effect.

Dr. Tyson is a worthy successor to his mentor, Dr. Carl Sagan.

The science behind the dust storm was actually accurate (to our knowledge) when the book was written. We learned about the atmosphere in a future mission.

The JPL thing may have been inaccurate (as we know it today), but the film takes place a few years in the future. Maybe the structure of the US space program is different, where JPL has more responsibilities along with NASA.

Even if Neil would've directed the movie as per his own wish, he could've criticized on it later
