Carburetor vs Fuel Injection

In my most recent #FairmontProject video I revealed that I was going to go with a turbo for the build. The video had only been posted a short time when the debate between going with fuel injection or a carburetor came up.

In this video I address some of those concerns and try to put a finer point on my choice of going with a carburetor over fuel injection for the build.

Something I would like the detractors of carburetors to keep in mind. It is MY car and I can build it the way I like. I'll let my dyno sheet speak for itself. I will say that if the carburetor doesn't work out, I'll certainly look into fuel injection.

Now, let the debating begin!

Intro music by Eric Cook "ETCG1 Intro".

Thanks for watching!

I'm old school so carb sounds good to me. Glad you're taking that route.

Best explanation of carburetors I've heard in a long time. I think I'd take EFI for a turbo build and a carb for supercharging or N/A, but I'm really excited to see how a turbo-carb build goes!!!! Great point about how a carburetor adjusts by design by the way. One of the best things about them.

I think it will be great! looked into these for a turbo ranger project I wanted to do. they are super simple and straight forward and I love that I can figure it out in my own. can't wait to see more videos. good work and thanks for the education!

You seem so zen sitting in that engine bay.

I'd still want a brand new car that has a carburetor.. I'm quite sure at this day the technology has advanced so much that we could make fuel efficient carburetors.. And even if not, i'd still want a carbureted car. I have rebuilt a two barrel carb and i'm going to rebuild a single barrel carb soon.

I really like the fact that you can tune it yourself.. And we do have air fuel mixture gauges so we can really tune it right to spec at home.

Fuel injection is one of those things that if it breaks, you're forced to go to a repair shop. You can't really do it at home if you're not a technician.. Even if there are tutorials in youtube, you can't beat the simplicity of a carburetor. All you need is an exploded view of a carburetor and you can rebuild it. You can mod it and you can tune it yourself.

BIG THUMBS UP FOR CHOOSING CARB ERIC!

Just wanted to say that I love how you present yourself. You've always shown an open mind and a willingness to have others challenge your thoughts and ideas. Keep doing what you're doing Eric, can't wait to see more!

I am old school, I am happy you choose carburetor over fuel injection, I am a big Holly fan. I use to rebuild them in my sleep. They were so simple back in the 70s I was even able to teach my wife how to go through one and install it. I look forward to your project.

In the end, it's your car and your choice! if a carb is what you like, then bu all means use one! when properly set up, it will be badass either way. both systems of fuel delivery have advantages and disadvantages. It's all about building the car you want. THAT is what hot rodding is. Making a cool, custom ride that is what YOU want it to be. You're building it for yourself to enjoy, not to gain another's approval. I think it's going to turn out great. It sounds like you've put a hell of a lot of planning into this project in order to make it exactly what you want, and I think that's awesome.

Keep doing what you do, Eric. I can't wait to see the finished product.

I am an old guy(61) and I grew up with carb's I totally agree with you Eric. And after all it is YOUR CAR, you are spending YOUR MONEY on it....do what you want for sure. I am looking forward to the build, I had a Fairmont, somewhat like yours, 6cyl, auto, so it is kind of a throwback for me.

There are so many builds with EFI why are people not happy to see something different???

One of my first bikes was a carb-turbo (Seca 650 Turbo) and it seemed to work fine. I'm interested in seeing how the Fairmont turns out.
BTW, all the time this tune was playing in my mind; _all we are saying, is give carburetors a chance..._

Great video and love the direction you are heading on your projects and the possibly of custom builds which is something different which is you. the Fairmont will look, sound, and perform awesome. Keep up the great work and the customer build is your build and no one else's.

Excellent choice!  If in your shoes I would do the same - go with a carburetor.  Mahalo!

I enjoyed and learned a lot from this video. I am at a crossroads of having a new engine installed in my 67 Chevelle. This video helped educate me on making an informed decision on which type of fuel system to get. I hope you produce more videos that will show your progression this process. Hang in there and good luck !

I drive daily a 1974 Ford Galaxie (BR made) with a 1965 Autolite 4100 carburetor in place of the factory stock two barrel, that works like a swiss clock. To install the carburetor I only had to pull the two barrel intake, and install a 1957 FoMoCo original "B" intake manifol. In short, I only used Ford original parts to convert the Y-Block from a two barrel to a four barrel. The car runs great, has no flat spots, hesitations, of things like that. The plugs all look great, and my ignition is the factory points and condenser type. I drive the car everywhere, and never, ever had to change jets, or anything like that. By the way, i'm running 49F jets on the primary and 56F on the secondary. I even run Firestone Wide Oval bias ply tires. Love this kind of technology. Super easy to work on, and won't leave me down. I have this Galaxie since 2001, and bought her to be a daily driver. The car takes me from A to B, with absolute reliability, '60s looks, and V8 background music. What else do I want? Nothing.
