THE MOST IMPORTANT DJ ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

Hey Guys, In this week's video, I wanted to talk about something I feel really passionate about. I wanted to give you the MOST IMPORTANT DJ ADVICE you will ever hear if you are a beginner. In this tutorial I give some great digital DJ tips, how to mix, and some DJ tricks and tips.

This is important advice for new DJs, this advice is to get out there and start DJing even if you don't feel you are as good as other DJs. The reason for this is that DJing is ALL about the music selection. It is not about your technical abilities.

Don't worry if you cannot do advanced scratching and technical stuff on DJ decks. As long as you can send one song into the next (without messing up the mix), then all you need to do is get out there and become better at selecting songs that you think your audience is going to like.

DJing is all about music selection, and you will only ever get better at this by DJing in front of a crowd.

Do not let your confidence hold you back. Remember that you are not DJing for other DJs, you are DJing to impress the general public, and they do not know anything about DJing. All they care about is if you are playing the music they love.

Tell you what Phil, I had a gig last weekend. The people around went mad, were screeming just because the music I played they liked. So you are absolutely right! Cheers! 👍😊

What you said about music selection is facts.. True story... I moved to Sterling CO. About 2 1/2 months ago. After going to a club a few times here I got contacted to be a special guest DJ due to their resident DJ taking off that Saturday. He is a stop and play DJ. So I was set on giving the crowd a new experience and introduce actual skills that I dedicated time to learn back when all we had was technique 1200s and a scratch master mixer. Needless to say that my mixing, blending and on the fly mashups did not do it for the crowd. So I just had to somewhat become I human jukebox. I was asked to perform again but this time my set will be better prepared with a lot of radio edits.. keep up the great work.

It's always the most popular songs that fill the floor. stuff from the 80s and 90s especially. Did a gig a little while ago and the last songs were all singers. Delilah, hi ho silver lining, take me home coutry road, Sweet caroline etc. Thw whole venue was singing their hearts out! That alone made my night because everyone was enjoying themselves :)

Well said mate, at the end of the day you’re the one getting paid not the other DJs watching you, and any promoter or bar owner will only be bothered about the punters having a good time on the dancefloor, however commercial the songs are, as sometimes it’s just best to hit the stop on one deck and play the next track from the beginning (no mix) if it’s a great tune people go mad!

I started DJing for fun recently because of my love for music. The whole art is cool and watching other DJs do cool stuff got me thinking can I play at a party? This video just give me a new level of confidence.

Totally agree with everything you said Phil. I would just add people are very visual also, so looking confident is important, how you present yourself and your setup all play a part on how they will judge you and your performance . Hearing wise get the volumes right and the balance of highs and lows nicely balanced so people can really enjoy the hearing part. But absolutely agree song selection and timing to when you bring in the next track have the biggest impact. I'm landscape designer so appreciate the tips too

Phil you've helped me out so much! The other night I did my first little neighborhood block party. I was just fading in and out and didn't look up for a bit but when I did everyone was dancing in the street. They didn't care how I mixed it as long as they heard the songs they wanted to dance to. Keep it Simple!

Thanks for the advice, I 100% agree with you, Ive been at events with the DJ doing so much technical and no one on dance floor but then when I’m at events it’s definitely songs as I’m not much technical I’m just with fading and looping but when you play the right song everyone comes onto the dance floor

I had the same experience with design school as well! I came out thinking I’m an artist, only to practically paint by numbers, according to the art director and client.
In photography, I use rule of thirds for composition. The client asks me to crop to center. :)))
And yeah, playing weddings and birthdays is easy money if you have all the greatest hits. 😜
