You mean a compression damper. A gas spring is what you would use to lift the door, like for a car’s trunk door.

Mine is very stiff, it's 200 N /20 kg do i need that 20 kg weight to use dis spring as hand activation was not possible for me, is this a fault in spring or should I use lower weight than 20, help me out please

Is the direction of the gas spring important? I was told the big cylinder must be at the bottom but I m not convinced.. in fact most videos I saw, the gas cylinder is on top and the rod is bottom.. I always thought it doesn't matter..
