Palpatine moves faster than ever before as he’s eager to press his advantage, a mocking smile on his lips taunting Mace. Suddenly, the Jedi Master snarls and counters his attack, pushing it aside and then springing forward. His lightsaber meets aggression with aggression as his counterattack finds its footing.
The aggression is unusual for a Jedi and takes Palpatine off guard. He whirls back and throws a surge of Force lightning, but Mace plants his feet on the ground and shoves it apart, directing it across the room and leaving deep scorch marks.
Mace grits his teeth, shifting his stance, and then pushes it towards him. Palpatine’s eyes widen and the explosion throws him back. He lands on the ground and scrambles to his feet as Mace advances on him and swings his lightsaber.
He realizes Mace is more powerful than the others and may lose this duel. But no matter what Anakin will soon be here and he can turn the tide. With that, he smiles and blocks these attacks and shifts defensively, letting Mace exhaust himself.
But the Jedi doesn’t tire or relent. He continues to press forward and he can sense something Palpatine doesn’t. A quiet in the Force as he knows Anakin is back in the Jedi Temple and waiting for him to finish. There will be no rescue for him.
He continues to press forward and slowly, Palpatine’s confidence wavers. He looks at the door anxiously, waiting for Anakin to show up. But this distraction is enough for Mace to drive a lightsaber across his side. He screams in pain and stumbles back.
When he looks up he can see the searing energy flowing through Mace, something that seems suspiciously close to the Dark Side. Mace continues to advance, facing not just Palpatine but also the dark energies within himself.
A snarl escapes Palpatine’s lips and he unleashes a storm of Force lightning, desperate to end the fight. This time, instead of being driven back, Mace steps forward, advancing against the torrent of dark energy, and directs the attack with his lightsaber back at Palpatine. The Sith Lord howls in pain as electricity courses through him and Mace finishes up by driving his lightsaber into his chest.
As Palpatine falls, Mace stumbles onto his chair, trying to catch his breath as he looks at the chancellor’s body. The gravity of the situation dawns on him as he knows this is just the first step. Although Palpatine was indeed a cancer that needed to be cut off, something needed to take his place.
But after everything that happened, his faith in the senate is shattered and they must take drastic action immediately. The galaxy is in chaos. The Republic is leaderless, and the Jedi are vulnerable. A leader must step forward.
Although he knows he must meditate, allowing the dark energies within himself to dissipate, Mace instead stands up and reaches for his communicator. Soon, Jedi arrive by the dozens as the best masters and knights arrive to reinforce him. They are accompanied by clone units loyal to them including his 187th Battalion.
Among these troops is Anakin. Mace takes the time to walk over to him and place a hand on his shoulders.
Mace: Now is as good a time as any for apologies, Skywalker. You were right all this time and we were blind to it. We couldn’t see the darkness building within our capital as the Jedi were blinded by their duties to the Senate. As I was blinded.
