Couple of fun facts about Miyamoto Musashi;
- He's called a "sword saint" in Japan. Basically, he was a philosopher who also killed folk
- He pioneered fighting with two swords
- He died in his own dojo while he slept, possibly due to cancer which was undiagnosed then
- He famously showed up to duels late or hungover to psyche out his opponents.
- He wasn't *technically* a samurai, but a ronin. He didn't serve a specific house or lord.

Strangely enough I read this book in the 7th grade and it was very profound to me. It wasn’t just strategy in fighting but all enemies in life. Helped me get through bullying, parry the word like you would parry the fist.

Preoccupied by a single leaf,
You will miss the tree.
Preoccupied by a single tree,
You will miss the whole forest.

I find this quote resonating with a lot of Musashi's Legacy.

The book is full of great quotes. Personal favorite:

“One thousand days of lessons for discipline; ten thousand days of lessons for mastery.”

It’s so crazy how long ago the guy lived and people still talk about him and his teachings

"Do Nothing You Will Regret.” Musashi inspired me in ways I can’t describe.
Thanks to Joe for raising awareness to Musashi's philosophy... Musashi inspired so much that I now dedicate my YouTube channel to his philosophy, since I believe that we can still apply a lot of it to the modern world ⚔

He defeated 60+ opponents in duels and killed most of them, but he didn't kill everyone he defeated, some survived but with severe injuries, like being permanently crippled. Some "to the death" duels don't need to go on until one person dies, only until one person is maimed within an inch of their life (neutralised/incapacitated).

Hávamál, The Book of Five Rings, The Art of War, and The Gulag Archipelago should be required reading. For everyone.

Any other recommendations?

I was bartending in Sacramento 2001, I was into fitness/martial arts and in excellent shape, a regular couple brought me this book to read. I totally understand his tattoo, and think about this book often after 20+ years.

I feel like the world is trying to tell me something here. I started skateboarding when I was 12 and became an intermediate vert skater. I stopped skating due to fear fear of injury around age 18. While I was skating I learned a little Piano, and how to read scales on a staff. I gave up on piano a long while ago, but I've been studying chess for the last 6 years. Currently I'm 2k Lichess
