[Twin Peaks] Season 3 Timeline Breakdown | Hypothetical Order of the Scenes in The Return

Twin Peaks season 3 shows scenes out of order. This video uses a hypothetical timeline to sort the events in the order they happened.
Twin Peaks season 3 parts 12 & 13 had a couple of obvious scenes that seemed to be presented out of order. This lead a lot of Twin Peaks fans to question the sequence of all of the Return's scenes and when exactly they took place. Redditor "thecowjumpedovertheM" had been working on sorting out a timeline for season 3 events, and updated after part 13 aired.
This Twin Peaks timeline video is based off thecowjumpedovertheM's work and is presented in a way that we hope makes the sequence of events in Twin Peaks s3 easier to understand. Using clues based on scenes where the date was mentioned, clothing that characters were wearing, and by other clues this is the best working time map we've seen.
Have you noticed that things in season 3 of Twin Peaks have been out of order time wise? What was the scene that made you question the season 3 timeline? How does hypothetical Twin Peaks the Return timeline effect your thinking on the rest of the season?

I'm just gonna say that the Twin Peaks return couldn't have come at a better time. It's such a welcome respite from the awful stuff we see on the news every day.

The hypothesis its enough for me to make me dizzy and very happy. This sounds pretty plausible to me and makes sense, so... congrats! You really worked hard and I appreciate very much! Good luck with the good job!

I've seen a lot of back & forth over whether The Return is taking part in 2016 or 2014, and I mostly buy into the 2016 theory...EXCEPT, the one thing that keeps sticking in my mind is when, at the morgue, when they're looking at Garland Briggs' body, Albert (talking to Gordon) says that Briggs had supposedly died in a fire 25 years earlier. The date of said fire, according the Secret History was March, 1989. 25 years after 1989 = 2014. If Garland's supposed date of death had been 27 years earlier, why would Albert have said it was 25?

Why can't we accept things as happening in the order we see them?

Becky tries to shoot Steven through a door, has dinner with her parents where she ultimately decides she doesn't want to leave Steven, then over the phone informs her mom that it's now been 2 days since Steven has been home, i.e., has run off with Donna's sister.
Dougie has Cherry Pie with the Mitchum Brothers, tries to play catch with his son the next day after work (or on a weekend), then the next day (or after the weekend), the Mitchum Brothers show up at Dougie's office with gifts.
Bobby's comment about finding something of his dad's that same day admittedly is hard to reconcile. Although it could be he found something else. If he was referring to the cylinder, wouldn't he have said, "my mom kept it hidden in a chair for 25 years."? Or perhaps if it was the cylinder on his mind, he would have not said anything about it since he might not want to be bothered with follow up questions like, "What did you find?" The fact that he said he found something makes me think he could be referring to a lost personal belonging of his dad's.
Admittedly, in general, it feels like a lot of scenes are filmed and placed randomly at different times into the show, typically when the timing of such scene is not significant. I think it's possible that in a few small cases, this practice may have inadvertently lead to a minor continuity error having zero impact on the main stories.

I have a feeling that most of this time-jump stuff is just the result of dividing an 18 hour movie up into hour-long chunks. I know the show was shot as one long film, but I doubt it just so happened that every hour addressed certain plot lines at certain times. I'm sure some things had to be chopped off and moved around a bit to avoid an hour ending in the middle of a scene.

Here's where I think the series is heading: The various groups will follow the coordinates to the Waiting Room. Once there, they will realize they have all entered from separate timelines. They will also realize that they have been in the wrong timelines. Mike and the Arm will sort them out and send them through the Mauve Zone back into the timelines where they were supposed to be in the first place. The Arm will send good Cooper back to the beginning of Fire Walk With Me.

AND THEN. . .(big possible spoiler)

The last two hours of the series will follow the events of Fire Walk With Me and the Pilot, except this time, Theresa and Laura won't get murdered! Good Cooper, back to himself, and armed with the knowledge from being in the wrong timeline, will know what's coming and prevent BOB from murdering anyone. Sarah Palmer will move from the "damn bad story" to the good story where Laura lives, and Audrey will find the story she's supposed to part of. And the scene from the trailer will be good Cooper driving off, having returned Twin Peaks to the right timeline.

If this isn't true, then I'm going to write a sci-fi novel based on this premise, because I really like it! :)

I seem to remember hearing somewhere there's an article in the new book on the bank explosion and it happened in 1989. So 25 years later would put all of this stuff in 2014.

It's actually hilarious that people are saying that there is a non-linear narrative to the show; I accidentally started watching the show in reverse order and didn't realise until I got to episode 7 yet - and here's the funny thing - I didn't see much different in the narrative when I finally started watching it from episode 1 because of the displaced events and visual queues :D . So I think, yes, there is some non-linearity to the show.

Becky visited Shelly for pie BEFORE she shot Gersten's door. Other things are also way off. Miriam was in ICU on Sept. 24th per the monitor in her room..

When we see Cooper with the Giant (aka Fireman) in Episode 1, he has no FBI badge.
In the red room however, it is there. It is still there until he's tricked by the arms Doppelgänger and falls into the realm of nonexistence.
Therefore, it's possible that this first scene with Cooper & the giant takes place after the following scenes.
Maybe it's even the giant speaking to Cooper as Dougie.

I think some of this is wrong ... scenes in Buckhorn in Parts 12 and 14 show a more compressed timeline. Diane was deputized the first night (while wearing the red shirt, after they came back from talking to Bill Hastings in jail.) this is also when they initiative Tammy into Blue Rose (i.e, before they go out with Hastings and see the wormhole.) The next morning she's wearing green and says "Deputy Diane reporting for duty." Which makes sense as she has just been deputized (is pumped about it maybe.). They tell her about the ring and Major Briggs (why would they wait to tell her this? It must be the morning after they found out.) I would have to check the clothes to figure out more but it does raise questions as to when did the Blue Rose team know about her texts, and also when she says about Las Vegas "they haven't asked yet, " maybe she is lying to whoever is texting her? But then why does Albert report it to Cole? Then again he doesn't remark on Las Vegas...

I was of the impression that everything was in linear time, except the events within Twin Peaks, who appear to be in some sort of weird time skip/loop.
Do we even know who Linda is yet? Apart from a woman in a wheel chair that lives at the trailer park, I mean.

Thursday, Sept 22 fell in 2011 and 2016....I looked it up. Either 4 years are passing in Season 3, or just 2 months in 2016....

Lynch (and Frost, people rarely credit him) play with time. Just like in the original series, when Fire Walk With Me came out it was before the series. Visions, the Black Lodge, the Waiting Room, all have a realm of time on their own. It's one of the things that makes the show so interesting; it's not linear. Also the Secret History plays around with time a lot too

The one where Becky calls Shelly saying she is worried about Steven being gone overnight should be before he stayed with Donna's sister.

American Girl/Ronette/Phoebe Augustine's watch seemed to indicate Saturday the 1st back in Part 3. We talk about this a bit on our podcast this week, but curious what others may think of that, given what we saw with Naido on October 1st.
