They thought they could control him, how wrong they were.

Although even though Hindenburg technically held the constitutional power to remove the chancellor, after summer 1933 the NSDAP was so deeply entrenched and popular that even Hindenburg probably wouldn't have been able to reverse course.

Hitler was installed as Chancellor by the German ruling class in order to crush the Communist Party and that’s the first thing he did after he was granted emergency powers after the Reich stag fire that was blamed on the Communists. Then, he banned the Socialist Democrat Party and within six months, he had established a one party dictatorship. But in fact, Germany had ceased to function as a democracy at least a year before Hitler became chancellor. By 1932, the Reichstag couldn’t function at all and the chancellor Papen just ruled by emergency decree. Hitler just made it official.

Hindenburg approved of Hitler's actions taken on the Night of the Long Knives.

Interesting stuff, I didn't know the part about Hindenburg being able to still remove him for a time. Thanks for the information on the book as well, definitely going to take a look!

I think even if he was removed from power by Hindenburg the moment he died it would've been a free for all.

The Night of the Long Knives happened a month before Hindenberg's death.

So in other words, Hindenburgs untimely death created a power void which Hitler was then able to take advantage of. Hitlers rise always really troubled me. He was a fringe extremist who was basically able to get just enough support and just enough luck to sift through the cracks and give himself more power. My mind immediately goes to the situation with Trump after that train of thought. I hope we’re not walking into a potential Germany ‘33 here.

The original Getty image by Heinrich Hoffman was black and white. However Jordan Peterson wears a trademark suit jacket that is blue and dull red. A sideways slap, or is this supposed to demonstrate Hitlers move from Chancellor to Fuhrer?
