I had incredibly strict and sheltering parents growing up. I was home schooled, home churched, wasn't allowed to listen to secular music, couldn't date and I wasn't allowed to make any of my own decisions. So when I left at 17, I went absolutely crazy. Became addicted to drugs and self destructive behavior. Until I met my wife at 19. I've been improving ever since. Now that I have my own kids I am raising them totally different than I was, much like the
"authoritative parenting" you described. So far they're turning out great! I still struggle with anxiety and depression, but every day I get a little better, and if you had a similar experience and are struggling, so can you :)

What helped me the most with raising my children was the book ‘Raising Warriors: Preparing Your Children For a Godly Life’. It is honestly a game changer

When kids show this to their parents.
Parents: "Are you really going to believe everything on the internet? You're so naive."

What I’ve gained from strict parenting;
-how to hide my feelings
-how to listen to footsteps
-people pleasing
-how to create a conservative and convincing lies.

When I grow up I never want my children to go through what I do. Because my parents feel like as if it is their job to emotionally break their children. I don't want my children to feel as if they can't talk to me about things. I don't want them to be afraid to be in the same room as me.I want them to be able to lean from their mistakes instead of fearing being hit for it.

"Children of strict parents tend to be more rebellious"

Well yeah, because they have more rules to rebel against.

I always found corporal punishment unnecessary. I mean, you're teaching your child to fear you, the one person in their life they spend most of their time with and trusted when growing up, it's a bit much.

It goes from
“I don’t need any help” to “Nobody does anything in this house!”

I come from an Asian family and they’re pretty strict. I think strict parents fails to realise that children are humans too, and they have their own feelings, opinions, needs and wants. They should really think about these factors before cramming stress and discipline down the children’s throats.

Not every criticism is constructive. Done wrong it leans to verbal abuse.

Parents: *Use abusive tactics for the better half of my first 16 years*

Therapist: Ah great, now look what you've done. It has depression.

Things I’ve learned from strict parents:
•hide feelings
•learn how to lie
•learn everyone’s footsteps

I never realized how strict (and abusive) my parents were until I moved out on my own. Now I’m 23 and finally starting to learn how to freely express myself and have my own autonomy. My mom is not dealing with it well.... apparently I’m going to rot in hell.... but I’m happy and thriving!
