If you live in a warmer climate but still want to grow delicious blueberries...you're in luck. I actually thought this wasn't possible, but got my hands on some low chill hour varieties that work really well for smaller spaces.

So if you want to grow blueberries in containers, these are some of my tips for getting them planted, making sure your soil pH is correct, and mulching so you don't lose moisture as they're quite a shallow-rooted plant.

I have found blueberries to do fine in hot areas. Had one (don’t know the strain) that got absolutely fried while we were gone a week in the 90 degree summer heat. Every leaf turned brown and fell of...then immediately grew back and kept on making berries ever after.

I'm 40 miles east of Los Angeles... I grow "Sunshine Blue" "South Moon" and "Pink Lemonade" blueberry plants... All three have low chill requirements and are some of the best tasting... I grow them in full sun though out the spring until fall when the plants go dormant in the winter... The I move them to the coldest part of the yard for the winter... They will do just fine with lots of cold weather and have had great results for years... Give it a try... 👍👍

Highbush varieties have come a LONG way, since I first tried growing blueberries back in the early 90s. I'm growing Southern Highbush "Bountiful Blue" and "Sunshine Blue" varieties here in L.A., Zone 10b, and am already getting handfuls of fruit.

Would love to get an update on how the blueberries are doing a year later. Which varieties fared better? Did you need to add any acidifying agents? Thank you!

Just bought a blueberry plant, lady at the Planthouse told me to plant it into Pead Moss after 4 weeks. Will get a pot, was going to use a wooden box. Love your channel.

Putting a small mesh and a handfull of sand at the bottom where the drainage is goes a long way. Lots of respect for this channel!

It’s been 95°+ for over a week here with no end in sight. I moved my container blueberry into the shade and it doesn’t seem bothered in the slightest by the heat. It’s in mostly peat moss, which retains water well, so it’s staying moist enough to stay happy. I think I’m going to mulch it too now though. Great video!

Yes - I just bought an O'Neil Blueberry Bush from Home Depot a month ago and put it in afternoon sun with alkaline soil lol - before I watched your video. I moved it to morning sun and gave it an acidifier... hopefully that helps. The poor baby was sun scorched a bit and then got mildew on the leaves which I treated with Neem. So it has gone through the ringer. Crossing my fingers - thanks for the tips! (I'm in Los Angeles, so zone 10)

That’s funny, I grew up picking blueberries at Two Light’s State Park in Maine. I’ve been growing them here in so cal in containers and in the ground with good results. Thanks for the video!

Well....I've done some research on the best blueberries for my area which us 30 miles south of Chicago. I chose Duke, Polaris and a Northblue planted in premix soil with some additive. They are on the east side of my home so they get about 6-8 hrs of sun. Now I hope they hold on during the cold winter ahead and look forward to lots of berries next year.
I also did similar with strawberries.
Thanks for your videos. Very helpful!

Although Tennessee is very hot in July & August; the winters are common to ice storms; this is a new project for me. I picked up some at Walmart on sale as they looked rough but had strong stems and looked like they could come back pretty good. I have a grow tent and picked up some full spectrum LED grow lights, and a red/blue spectrum. So, I am trying to get smart on the led color ranges. Thanks for the content

Like you I foraged for wild blueberries in Alaska, so I thought they were a cold weather plant. Then I went to a blueberry farm near Conroe, TX. HOT climate. I'm gonna try container growing some in the west Texas desert.

Excellent video. Chula Vista east of 805 here...this year, excellent spring yields of early, mid and late varieties purchased at Hunters Nursery in Spring Valley. I think the early variety is Star or Jewel. Mid is Sunshine Blue. Late is Reveille, which is not in as radiantly sunny a place as the other two whisky barrels. We planted an orchard on a sunny terrace formerly occupied by heavy tall brush. Condo owners paid for, planted and care for the trees.

Agreed. My low chill hour blueberries didn't do as well as my high chill during a 30 year ice storm in Texas. My pink lemonade blueberry is still having a hard time coming back. 😔

I’m growing Bountiful Blue in 10 gallon SmartPots here in Los Angeles. I’m using the same soil recipe with added perlite and vermiculite. They taste amazing!

Misty Blueberries are low chill, around 300 hrs also, and grow great where it'a a little warmer

Just saw some blueberry 🫐 bushes at Lowe’s today. Undecided if I wanted one or not. I’m sold 😊 I’ll place it or them under the carport. Thanks
