I may not be a mortician, Loyal Theorists, but I can declare that the DC Universe is DEAD. At least the iteration with Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, Aquaman, and the rest of the Justice League. DC has been struggling to make its movie franchise work for years, but I finally found a way to fix it! And I’ll even share my reaction to James Gunn’s new DC slate of Gods and Monsters. You’ll have to watch to see if I think it will FAIL or succeed...

Shows like Batman, Superman, Static Shock, Ben 10 Alien Force, Teen Titans, Young Justice and Generator Rex were some of the best shows of all time. The fact they weren't just silly cartoons, but instead had deep, mature and gripping story arcs, made them so enthralling.

The DCAU was such a lesson in animated storytelling perfection.

I'll never understand why DC didn't just release the animated stuff in theaters I'd love to watch it that way

Literally when Matt mentioned cartoons and showed the iconic heroes that I GREW UP WITH, I celebrated as if we won a war. FINALLY, someone understands and is willing to make their voice heard! These cartoons (Justice League, Justice League Unlimited; movies like Justice League: War and Justice League: Dark; these movies PROPELLED me into becoming a DC fan. I grew up with that version of DC, and it would literally mean everything to relive those days

As soon as this man said “the key to solving all of it…cartoons” I leaped out of my chair and screamed yes. Finally someone understands

I love that Mat brought up the witcher mess even briefly. Glad to know that they understand the writers were in the wrong for changing the material so much

RIP Kevin Conroy. I grew up with the entire DCAU because my dad grew up with it. I could write several essays on why they are the best versions of the storys told, and how they did such a great job, but it'd be easier to tell you to go watch them yourself. It's all a work of art

DC thinks they are competing with Marvel. For many fans, they are competing with the DCAU, and failing horribly by nearly every metric.

The DCAU was such a gift. I loved those shows growing up. They still hold up pretty well even twenty-thirty years later. It should not be difficult to create a viable live-action film franchise with these characters.

Never underastimate the power of animation

"Respect the source material" is something I've been pushing for, and I'm sure others do too. I can't not think of a series getting an adaptation in which the creators just simply DGAF with what they were given to produce, and then yell at the fans as if it's the fans fault for not supporting their "vision".

I’m a DC purist at all costs and tend to be a bit of a snob when it comes to others’ opinions on DC honestly, but Matt has NAILED IT HERE! Never have I heard anyone understand DC better and have a better plan for actually making it successful!

Literally my childhood 😭 my dad and I used to watch the animated series when I was little and I recently revisited it and omg the writing is so good. The question, huntress, hawk girl and green arrow became some of my most favourite characters

I absolutely loved Static Shock and Batman Beyond, those were two of the best of the time.
I really hope Static makes the big screen at some point.

Those cartoons were so great! The contrast between Superman/Metropolis and Batman/Gotham was incredible. They also made me think that Metropolis was West Coast while Gotham was East with Central City hiding around Kansas City. It kept those main heavy hitters apart and probably confused a large audience when the DCEU had Gotham and Metropolis literally within sight of each other. AND THEN somehow Superman never ventured into Gotham even though his powers make him a global persona and Batman would already have figured out Sup's identity. B vs S was rough but I grew to like the Snyder cut. Hopefully when Darkseid shows his rebooted face he looks more menacing than the gray grampa look.

I’ve been getting through the DCAU for the past year or two now and I love the pacing the cameos the way they do events and characters it’s so amazing to see how 20-30 years ago they had could make such awesome meaningful pieces of art that connect in such intricate ways

Speaking as someone who loves to write, this is honestly really good advice you're giving out. I know a great many people might think it SOUNDS dumb to not have a plan (if the fan reception to the New Star Wars Trilogy is any indication), but, honestly, not having a plan doesn't restrict you creatively; I do still stress the importance of good note-taking, but basically just don't overthink how your story is gonna go: it frees up room to do what you want, when you want, how you want, where you want, why you want with your characters and the world they're in. I'm not a professional writer, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt. ;)

When Matpat talks about the Guantlet at 17:35, it being a fake of a quantlet that hadn't existed yet still makes sense, it was in Odin's private vault and Odin is known for being a guy who can see into the future (which in Norse mythos is to try and prevent ragnorok) so Odin, thinking it was cool, had a fake made before the real thing existed, probably an ego thing

I've been saying that the DCEU should've followed the DCAU ever since Batman vs Superman and its insane how it seems so obvious to follow and use as a general outline for all the generations yet they just mashed things together. It's infuriating how easy it was
