When I first got back into the system in 2018, I started out as excepted service. After I finished the 2 year probation period I was converted to competitive service.

You have great free videos. No one is really doing this kind of valuable stuff. Thanks for being a reliable source.

Hi Armand

Schedule A is not guaranteed to become converted to competitive service. It is the agency choice. Thanks

Thanks so much for the clarification! Currently in the Excepted service for over 10 yrs and searching for a change of "environment." Do I need to ask during an interview if the job/position will become competitive if it's showing up in the job search as excepted?

So if i have 2 years Competetitive service right now and get a Excepted Service posistion under schedule A, 2 years later i would be tenured in the Competetitive Service with 4 yrs+ of course being tenured at 3.

I get a great deal out of your videos. As an undergrad, I did federal internships. Years later, I was a federal contractor. Years later, I became a federal worker. I applied under Schedule A. Recently, in a Notice of Referral, I was told that I am still in the Excepted Service and am not eligible for positions Open To the Public. This surprised me because I am 70 days from my 3 Year Anniversary. I remembered that you had a video on the subject. After re-watching your video, I checked my SF-50. After seeing that I was still in the Excepted Service, I reached out to HR. I communicated with a colleague. It appears that I am not the only person who has not been converted. It looks like this matter will be investigated because I raised it. Because of your video. You made a real difference.
If I might share - Yes, you CAN go to a doctor to get a Schedule A Letter. But, they won't know what it is. Since WWI, the federal government has required every state to have a Vocational Rehabilitation Department. States name them differently. State Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors know what a Schedule A Letter is. Or, SOMEONE in the office should. The mission of State Vocational Rehabilitation Officers is to get People with Disabilities employed. If you or your viewers might benefit from this information.

Thank you Thank you so much!! This video was exactly the information I needed because I didn’t know the difference spent 13 years in excepted service then due to a RIF I left and now in competitive service and have to start over again. Unfortunately the position is not working out in competitive and I’m back searching again 😢I hope things change and I can stay in competitive to build status.

I did not know that I was hired as excepted service for 2 years. As a result, I haven't reached career-tenure yet. I did convert over to Competitive.

So after 24 months in federal government, I should automatically be converted to competitive service?

If not, how would I go by going from excepted to competitive?

Is there something wrong or different with staying excepted service until retirement?

So if initially in an excepted service position, you would have to wait 5 years to have tenure (2 to convert to competitive and 3 within competitive)? Does being excepted decrease ability to move positions internally?

If I were to accept a position in the Excepted Service and then it later converted to the Competitive Service after 24 months, are you saying that even if I did another let's say five years in the Competitive Service, going that route wouldn't establish any tenure.

The information in your videos is great, but the dopey faces you make in thumbnails for your videos are annoying.
