I recommend reading A Mathematician's Lament by Paul Lockhart. I'm a college math prof and it drains me whenever I get a new class of kids in who think that math is just plugging numbers into opaque formulas. One comparison that Lockhart makes is comparing math education to a music education where where you only learn notation. Like imagine if all you learned in music class what how to write notes, transpose keys, and memorize tables of chords. Never once were you able to actually HEAR music. You'd think music was useless and difficult for no reason! That's how math is treated and it's sad :(

As someone who studied math myself in university, the environment kind of ruined math for me. There's this weird elitism and pressure with math sometimes. I found that people who study it think they're hot shit or they're really cool and humble, nowhere in-between. Once you let go of your baggage and just learn for the sake of learning, math is just about expanding your horizons of knowledge and thinking using numbers and logical rules. It's a beautiful thing that can help you understand a lot about how the world works.

What's evil and malicious is how we're often forced to engage with math. I'm an engineer so I've had to take plenty of math. Most of it ultimately useless to me. When the prof was passionate about it and taught well, brought the real world and the numbers on the board together, I enjoyed math. When the prof just vomited symbols on the screen and said "figure it out" was when I stopped enjoying it. It felt like a hoop to jump through not a tool to get familiar with.

Until I got to whatever the fuck semiconductors math is supposed to be. Materials science folks are derranged.

This is why I usually say that while I’m not good at math, I do like it. Most of my negative experiences with math were due to a mismatch between the math teachers I had and my brain’s way of learning. Looking up math videos for help is what introduced me to how cool math can be. That’s how I ended up actually enjoying math later in high school. I don’t blame math haters, though. Tbh the US education system can drain the interest, creativity, and fun out of any subject in my experience. And that’s not even taking into account the impact of negative experiences many have with their education from parents/guardians (or the lack thereof)

Math is calm and friendly? I mean I'm a mathematician and for me math is insane, hard as fuck, and beautiful. And that's what I love about it.
