*I messed up, orange belt locks can have security pins. so just a heads up.

* the black belt lock I used in this video is not an ASSA 700, it’s an ASSA Twin 6K.

*The Abus lock that accepts key-in-knob cylinders is the 83 series. Not 88 or 84.

*Chris Ahrens was the first person to pick a Kwikset Smart Key Gen 3. Not an American Smart Key. I was really tired when making this video so there were some mistakes.

Excellent video. You provide such good information for the locksport community. Your in-depth reviews and general observations fill a void in many of the videos I see that demonstrate something but explain very little. Thank you so much for providing helpful, informative content.

What a very cool idea and set. It's unfortunate that the cost would be prohibitive to a large percentage of the community including myself. I'll just have to stick with the pleb half of the rainbow at blue belt and below.

I think it's a cool idea.
Some ideas:
1. It would be nice to have something written on the lock itself that defines it as a training lock.
2. It would be nice if it would be possible to open the lock by turning the cylinder in both directions, so it be possible to practice both.
3. It would be nice if you could buy each color of lock separately from the other locks, and then you could choose from several types of cylinders the one you want. It will also help the locks companies, because they will have another market to sell to, so they give the cylinders for less.

Great idea and excellent video, thanks for making and sharing this! I think the colored electrical tape is a nice way to ease into classifying one’s locks, and agree the $700+ is cost prohibitive for the vast majority of folks. Have you considered selling a $10 PDF with *instructions* for how someone can assemble their own Dojo, with exact working links of exactly who to order from, what modifications need to be made, etc.? You could make a little $ for your efforts, help the community, and sure people could “pirate” the ebook/PDF but at only $10 why bother, just give Sandman something for his trouble and feel like a good person instead of a jerk 😊

That’s a very cool idea. Buying locks is certainly one of the most confusing parts of the sport. If you were to package the first 5 or 6 maybe… as a jumping off point….
It is a very cool idea.

Merry Christmas, Sandman. Hoping you're well with your partner and family this festive season.

I remember when you first proposed the idea to me and a few other people -- you were looking for some locks that would come in a KIK system and would go through the ranks. I'm so happy that the project finished, but unfortunately as speculated, it is at such a magnitude that the price just cannot be justified. I think the biggest issue is the lack of lock bodies which can house given lock types, which severely reduces the choice of lock, thus increasing the price as other, more economic options, are unavailable (think the MIWA U9, black belt lock from Japan, 10 bucks each or thereabouts).

At the same time, maybe it's for the best. They would be a big investment even if everything here was halved in price. That sort of thing is a big commitment for a newbie. Either way, I'm sure plenty of people (myself included) will be taking inspiration from this idea. Maybe there will even be a machinist who makes universal lock bodies for the major types of cores (KIK, euro, oval, australian standard) with matching adapters. That would be cool.

Have a happy holidays, mate. Love your work.

As a former martial artist I like that the belt system gets harder as you go up, and teaching is part of the higher belts. In order to get your belts you also need to source all the locks, kinda like building your lightsaber before you can become a Jedi Master. lol If I was to buy a lock set, the locks would all have to be the same size. OCD is killing me looking at the smaller locks in the line up.

Very nice review! The lock classification group list you presented is quite dated. Locks are currently ranked by all black belt members and a select few other members on a spreadsheet, once there is a decent number of rankings in for a particular lock, the locks in question are presented to the lock classification council (Peaceweapon does an excellent job with all the logistics on this). Traditionally, we would have CorrectJeans decide on all classifications and present the belt change list, however Peaceweapon now presents it based on the council approving or denying the rankings presented from the lock classification group. The council was changed from just CorrectJeans to include Rein and GravityKarma, and eventually expanded to including a few additional LPU mods.

I'm new to the hobby and thought that this was very helpful.
I live 30 min from Austin and was excited to see a local group.
Great job!

Oh wow, I've got to get into this. I'm just getting into security pin picking(American Locks, Masterlock LOTO locks, etc), so I've considered myself "intermediate".

The Abus lock body you're thinking of is the 83 series. It comes in many different sizes, although my recommendation is 83AL/45. It's the lighter aluminum body which is great for picking in hand.

Also thanks for the plugs to lpubelts :)

Very cool. I saw those and just thought that was already happening. It is such a great idea maybe it will start to catch on slowly.

That will help me in my future purchases. There are so many people that gave advices on YouTube and when you try them, it's baloney. I just succeed to open an American Lock 1100 yesterday and now I know what will be my next purchases. Just for fun, how the safety locks ranked? I find them hard for plastic body padlocks 😁

this is insanely cool, I’d LOVE to buy a set like this.

If you put together belt packages, like a kit with everything you need to attain that I personally have had many issues tracking down locks for advancement that are not sfic's. Like 2 locks of each type required, a booklet of tips and instructions for challenge locks, pin creation, pick making, etc. and have a tool option like tensioners and picks needed for the keyways of the locks in the package

I'd absolutely buy this as a set, but if it's not financially viable that's totally understandable.

All that aside-- Merry Christmas Sandman.
