Tips on finding the queen bee & queen spotting practice #shorts

Having trouble finding your queen in a hive full of honey bees? Need some practice queen spotting from this video?

Here are some tips!

Look for the behavior: the retinue will form around her in a circle, crowd around her, and then clear the way for her to walk.

She will be a very slow moving bee (usually) in the middle of the constantly forming retinue.

She will likely bee on a frame of brood. Often uncapped brood, but not always!

Some people say to move your eyes from left to right across the frame, instead of the right to left we are used to. It can force us to slow down and notice details that we may not otherwise pick up when scanning something.

The retinue that forms around her is tending to her every need and spreading here pheromones around the hive so the entire colony can know she is present.
