Periods are viewed differently across various cultures and religions, each bringing its own beliefs, customs, and rules surrounding menstruation. In some cultures, menstruation is seen as a natural, even powerful, process, with practices celebrating this time as a symbol of womanhood, fertility, or strength. Other cultures or religious traditions, however, may associate menstruation with taboos, prescribing restrictions on activities or interactions.

For instance, some religions have rules regarding personal space, diet, or prayer during menstruation, often reflecting ancient views on purity. In Hinduism, menstruating women may be asked to avoid religious ceremonies or enter certain temples, while in some Orthodox Jewish communities, there are specific practices around touch and ritual cleansing. Meanwhile, Indigenous cultures may hold “moon time” ceremonies, honoring menstruation as a sacred cycle.

Despite these differences, the approach to menstruation is evolving in many parts of the world, with efforts to promote understanding, reduce stigma, and celebrate menstruation as a natural part of life. This diversity in interpretation highlights the blend of tradition, cultural values, and changing perspectives around menstruation worldwide.

I can't decide between "strawberry week" or "hide the pickle" for my favorite euphemism from this short

For women with painful cramps and other terrible things, the monthly cycle really is like a monthly subscription, except it's to some food you're allergic to, and you're forced to eat it and can't give it to someone else who wants it.

"How many euphemisms should we put in the script?"

"YES."

My incredibly heavy, incredibly painful periods were one reason I incinerated my uterus, cervix, and both ovaries in the hospital incinerator last June. It is hands down the best decision I have ever made.

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and my spine, hip, and SI dislocations stopped overnight when I was no longer having hormonal swings. I'm in my 30s, so I have supplemenal estrogen to protect my bones and heart, but its a low dose and much better than progesterone for hypermobility.

I will love my GYN forever for giving me this gift. She has changed my life forever.

As jealous as I am of people who were born without one, my first response would NEVER be to say that they're lucky

Idk how much longer I'm going to keep this comment up. People who are born without them may not have to go through the struggles that other people do, but they will never have biological kids and didn't get to decide that for themselves. THAT is the point I was trying to make. Neither party is in the wrong in this situation and no, I cannot simply just get mine removed.

I'm in the group of "remove it, I'm done".
Have been vocal and cognisant of not wanting kids since I was 3. Have endometriosis. Been on depo shots for over 10 years.
Id LOVE to get rid of everything if I could, but the ovaries need to stay sadly because of hormones.

I can understand how it would be upsetting for someone to not have a uterus. While I find my period inconvenient, I’m thankful to know I’m healthy and able to conceive when the time comes

I may be a person who wouldn't mind having no uterus, but that doesn't mean some can't want one when they don't have one. If I could donate mine to someone who wants it, I'd be very happy to do so. I don't want any babies from myself, I can't deal with small kids for long periods of time (really over 15 minutes unless it's just my nephew and niece), so if someone can and wishes to have kids, I'd donate my uterus to them

In the religion of Islam, you can’t pray or fast while on your period but that doesn’t mean that periods are viewed negatively!! It’s simply a mercy that you can focus on resting and recovering during that time, without worrying about neglecting your prayer.

I would genuienly LOVE to donate mine to someone who wants it. I'm into women and do not want to experience pregnancy, so having one is just pointless suffering for me.

I hope one day we are able to do what we want with our bodies.

As a 41 years old woman, mother of one with no plans to bring another soul into this world, with heavy periods, loaded with bloating, liquid retention, cramping and crazy digestive issues, I’m in “I’m done with it” team. I would really appreciate if a good gynecologist would be willing to take everything out for good.

Yeah people are like “you’re so lucky you hardly get your period!!” When I tell them I have PCOS until I list all the other symptoms and complications that come with it and they’re like “oh nvm”. Yeah having a period every month is annoying, but to me it’s better than the alternative

In Islam, periods are seen as a normal and natural things. The blood itself though is impure, so a woman on her period shouldn't touch a Quran, instead we read from the phone or without touching the book. Note that anyone can't read the Quran unless they clean themselves by performing ablution, even without a period.

We're given a rest from the mandatory prayer and fasting during our periods. Fasting days are to be compensated later, but prayers no. We can still perform other acts of worship though.

Intercourse isn't allowed either during that time of the month.

I’ll tell you one thing I had my ovaries removed and it sent me into the most crazy intending sense of doom I have ever uncontrollably had

It was terrible until the next five days when they finally put me on hormone meds. There was something in my brain that was like oh my goodness I need to die like I have to, and it was like an uncontrollable thought, and it was like the worst feeling ever

“Subscription to the flow channel” is the most creative term for having a period I have ever heard. 😲

“I don’t have a uterus”
I get super painful periods, but i don’t think my first response would be “omg ur so lucky” that’s just insensitive to the fact that she can’t have children….
Think before you speak.
