I do not think Russia will invade - not unless the Ukrainian leadership pushes through with NATO memebership. Ukraine should instead focus on being neutral and reap the benefits from both sides. I believe that Russia only wants Ukraine to be a "buffer" to NATO expansion.

Sometimes it's not about being right or wrong, it's just that you've got to act. That's it! Russia's sovereignty will be seriously compromised if Ukraine joins NATO as it'll bring NATO to Russia's doorstep. On the other hand, Ukraine is a sovereign nation and it should be free to decide what to join and not to join. Also, Russia can't wait for Ukraine to join NATO to take action as it'll only make situation for Russia worse. So it needs to act fast. And If Russia invades Ukraine, Russia will be much closer to Europe than it's now, precisely why European nations are worried. I guess the best would be to temporarily accede to the Russian demand that Ukraine be kept away from NATO for an indefinite time until the situation cools down. But I don't think EU with all its egoistic reasons would bow before Russia for a peaceful present.
