His question was worded quite poorly. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and say he is asking if TikTok could access other devices through a wifi Which the answer is yes. Viruses that are put on the original device can spread to others on your wifi.

I don't understand why they didn't call some IT guys to ask the questions or at least run there questions through an IT person...

The Wi-Fi is an access point for all information on that network or connected to that network. My husband is a sys admin and has our home locked down so tight that periodically I yell at him to white list a website I need.

Its actually a logical question that wasn't worded right. What hes asking is how much permission is required by tiktok and does it gather and hold the network information. With the network information, you can access all websites you have browsed, if you have credit cards saved and passwords, they would have access to that as well.

What he is getting at is the app reporting details about home networks and other devices accessing the network back to HQ. That information could then be used to exploit vulnerabilities in those devices and potentially those users depending on other indicators the app is collecting. It's also possible to exploit wifi to see through walls -- really that's open source information.

As ridiculous as the question sounds, it is a basis of tiktoks testimony that in fact, Tik-Tok can use a Holmes wi-fi system. Therefore if it is using that Holmes wi-fi system it can access any information utilized on that Wi-Fi net. The senator is not stupid, he is laying groundwork.

To be fair it's the gateway to get access to your personal accounts, so many people using public WiFi got their datas breached and liable for loans they didn't take. Here is a deeper issue regarding third party most likely the CCP gaining access to all your accounts including facial recognition. A Chinese Singaporean lady revealed this on Joe Rogan podcast.
