The more I learn about Rolex, the less I want one.

If Rolex would’ve stayed in England , would’ve gone out of business, imagine watches with Land Rover’s reliability 😂

I wonder whether if Ian Fleming hadn’t had James Bond wear a Rolex in some of the original novels, the company would ever have risen to as much prominence…

Rolex is proof that marketing and brand recognition are powerful things. Rolex is wildly beaten in all aspects by more than a few other makers in their prices points, big time.

I'd really like to see a video about Sinn watches and particularly, on the subject related to the origins of the Navigatorsuhr AKA the german Navitimer!!

Love the history. More please. I would love some history about the little town Glasshuette and all the watchmakers and brands from there. Thank you

Rolex Rolex Rolex Rolex. Maybe, just maybe, your viewers are watch enthusiasts who would love to hear more about other brands we don’t hear about all the time. Your features on dorbluth, glasshutte, moser, Piaget, Bulgari etc are the best ones. Could you do a feature on Czapek, Laurent Ferrrier, Gronefeld, etc? Yes I know these are all unattainable but that’s not the point

Thank you for this informative history with its ironical interventions. These close-ups make Rolexes look very attractive. If only they were available in the stores. Or if they were safe to wear. Many years ago, I was relieved to get over my watch snobbery and finally buy a Rolex. It freed me from seeking out and wanting to buy a new watch every few months. My Rolex was a versatile beater--indestructible and yet acceptable for the board room. Then, around 20 years ago in the US, drivers were getting forced off the road for their gold Rolexes (seen on the wrist through the driver's side window). Switch to stainless steel. Now, for the past several years, anybody can be robbed of a stainless steel Rolex. In Rio, after leaving a restaurant. In Amsterdam, outside a bar. In Paris, strolling the Champs Elysees. In Los Angeles, while shopping. This makes me wonder: what would Hans Wildorf do?

The real shocking fact about Rolex would be...to find one in an AD shop 🤣🤣🤣🤣

1) They are not as good as you think
2) 85% of the value is hype
3) You will feel like a total IDIOT the day you need someone with a Grand Seiko that cost 30% of the cost of your Roles and is clearly in a different dimension of quality
4) You will spend all your time trying to convince people it's not fake
5) It does not mean you have "made it" it means you have low self-confidence and define yourself through trinkets you hope will impress others like you

[I had 5 Rolexes before I grew up]

I have a Skydweller, but I disagree with the poster below, at retail they are good watches, things get silly in the second hand and grey market, like the OP41 light blue "Tiffany" dial and Ceramic bezel Daytona and yes I agree they are very overpriced vs the actual retail price and therefore not the quality the market price demands.

All the Swiss brands went through the imported movements(and usually cases) through local imprters into the British market in the early days. In that market watches were bought by retailer rather than brands, especially Swiss brands that pretty much nobody had heard of or could pronounce. Note too that Swiss movements were gilded in the UK market, what that market excepted as English movements were gilded. Swiss brands sold in the rest of Europe were more likely to be steel and Geneva striped.
Hans Wilsdorf was very clever here too(and I reckon he was looking to America and their long standing brand marketing). Over time he started to insist British retailers carry his brand on the dial. This was big. A few years earlier Longines as a marketing positive had sent a letter to their British dealers promising never to put their name on the dial or the movement in the UK. Hans got his way and the others followed.
The name itself Rolex was designed to be easy for English speakers to say. He had a few other sub brands like Unicorn, Rolco, Marconi and registered names like Genex, Falcon, Wintex and Rolexis. Of all the early other brands Tudor, a very English word, was the only one to survive.
Oh and the first GMT was from Longines, who among other things also came up with the two button chrono(not Breitling) and the flyback and rotating bezel and the GMT with their Dual-Time of 20 years earlier.

No doubt Rolex make great watches and I for one would love one, but objectively speaking if you remove the brand name from the watch I think you wouldn't want to spend more than 3 to 4K.
