With Heat and Hesh ammunition at the time requiring ridiculous amounts of steel armor to protect against the Leopard 1 was designed with a different philosophy. The armor was just good enough to protect against auto cannon fire while the tank was relatively compact with high speed and agility. If you cant protect against a penetration be too fast and nimble to be hit.

People tend to think about the leopard 1 being “so fast it can’t be hit”

No the point of it being “fast” was to exit cover, shoot, reverse back into cover then quickly changing firing position.

It can only go around 70kph. It’s about 48mph.

It’s not that fast that it can simply dodge return fire.

During the Gulf War I saw the aftermath of these munitions on the Soviet bloc tanks, pretty ugly inside them. One Iraqi tank managed to hit one of our Abrams with a dart but it only went in a couple inches and the crew used it as a new step peg to get on the turret, lol.
