Patch 12.12 added a bunch of new malfunctions to Escape From Tarkov and it also added the ability to overheat your gun. While on the surface it seems like something you won't run into very often, it turns out that this will greatly effect your guns durability, accuracy, and reparability. Check out the video where I do a deep dive into all things overheating!

Have you had your gun overheat in Tarkov yet?

Seems like LMGs in the future are gonna have some big roles to play with full auto with these changes

So heat stat affects heat from individual shots while cooling affects the passive cooling ability of the weapon. More heat stat, faster gun heats up, more cooling, faster gun is able to exit that overheat state. Muzzles and barrels that reduce heat won't overheat as quickly but if they don't have high cooling then they'll stay overheated longer one they get there.

I think with the fast weapon swap they shouldn't just speed up the animation, looks kind of wonky, they should make it so you just drop it to your hip since its on a sling and pull out your pistol

Really good video, love the amount of research you've put into this topic. With every new patch I find myself admiring the work BSG puts into this game, it really is special in a lot of different ways. I'm also really looking forward to the whole series with Brownells. 🤠

Weapon durability drops wayyyy tooo quickly, especially on guns like the AK platforms which are extremely durable in real life. They should've incorporated weapon cleanliness instead since that is far more realistic. A dirty gun is much more likely to cause a malfunction.

Someone should probably do testing on RPK vs AK-74. In theory LMGs should perform better since they are made for firing a lot.

The reason some of these ammo types say they remove heat is because the brass casing effectively functions as a heatsink. When it gets extracted after firing, some of the heat gets "extracted" as well when the empty shell gets thrown out. A good example of a gun failing to do this is the H&K G11 because it used caseless ammo, aka no brass case. The chamber would get so hot that it would start cooking off the remaining ammo in the gun and fire uncontrollably.

Not going to lie, weapon malfunctions and overheating intrigue me and would love to see a proper system implemented. What I don’t want to see is erroneous malfunctions and overheating after one or two magazines of full auto fire. In reality it would take 8-10 full mags of repeated full auto mag dumps before seeing any reliability/accuracy degradation.

It would be interesting to see how fire rate effects the overheat. Like a SCAR-L with 650 RPM vs a HK-416 with 850 RPM both firing 60 rounders of the same ammo.

Does the flashing yellow/red in the bottom corner happen with every malfunction or just overheating? Never noticed it before this video… Thank your for keeping us all in the loop with the changes!!

I love that they've made sidearms very useful for this.

Here's something concerning overheating in Tarkov I wanna know: is it affected by environmental weather? If it's pouring rain in a raid, will it take longer (even if only slightly) for a gun to overheat, and shorter for it to cool off?

I would love to see an "everything you need to know about" for the new ballistic system and damage falloff, as it has some major flaws atm. currently you cant deal enough damage to one shot a player in the unarmored head at about 600m due to the falloff(the dead tree mountain on lighthouse has a great view and the new rangefinder for your rifle makes testing easy and accurate) i tested multiple rounds and its a real shame that sniping is basically nerfed into the dirt this wipe

The FN SCAR is notoriously unreliable IRL so that’s not a surprise. However AK and M-4s should be able to easily rip through 10, 30rd mags without seizing

Never thought I would see someone doing a IV8888 style meltdown in a video game. Love the video!

Interesting, I play with some guys that always ran multiple big mags and would always mag dump, although it was rare they needed more then two or three. I see this affecting the guys who like to 1v4 pvp, or maybe if one ran into a larger group of scavs and had a big fight.

Last wipe I ran a lot of silenced P90's and most kills were mag dumps due to the fire rate, will be interesting to see how it fares.

Very helpful video, Jesse thank you! I'm a lot more informed on overheating now!

the only time this afected me is when i fought multiple pmcs in dorms with a kedrB the supressor got red hot as i killed the last guy with my 3rd mag but didnt jam. after the raid i noticed it lost almost 20 max durability

BTW, ricochet chance on helms is actually the amount of the hitbox in which a ricochet can occur, while each round has it's own ricochet chance ( you can see on nofoods ammo chart) and each round in game also should note it's own ricochet chance
