As someone who is just getting into automatic watches, the advice about setting the time to 6 before adjusting the date is invaluable.

I have had my automatic since 2002. I thought I broke the winding mechanism by shaking it too much around 2006. It became a dust collector in my dead battery watch pile. I ordered a watch repair kit to change batteries for 15 dollars. I though I might take the back off and peek in, give a little lube and see what happens. YouTube has enabled me to attempt any repair myself.

After watching the video for the first 2 1/2 minutes, I almost ran to my watch collection and started to wind it.

It was working in 5 seconds. Believe it or not, when I went to set the date, IT WAS ALREADY SET ON THE 27TH!!!

I think I will remember that moment for quite some time.

Thank you,

To correct one thing he said in case you own more affordable autos like Seiko 5 or Orient 3stars, if the date is half changed it does not mean a tooth broke. It just means it can take about 4 hours to fully change the date, usually from 10 PM to 2 AM

Excellent, thank you. I had never been told any of that before and your timing is perfect as I am receiving the first automatic watch since I was a kid for my birthday in a couple of days. Thank you, a great help for me out of the blue. Ten thumbs up!

I've had my late 1960s Omega Seamaster for about 6 years. I wear it fairly frequently; it's my only watch. It was fixed before it was given to me and I was told it would need oiling once a year. I've only had it serviced once since then; it's certainly due for an oiling again if that initial advice is indeed true. When I had it serviced the man seemed surprised I was bringing it in as it was still working, even though he had been the one suggesting it be oiled once a year. I was then told about the only thing he could do was clean up the gummed up oil and re-oil it. I said OK and went through with the service which ended up costing about $50 or $60. A few months later I found that it wasn't keeping time very well though I was promised a 6 month warranty. I brought it back and it was fixed for free; I was told when I picked it up that a spring was out of whack or something. Here we are another year or two later and I'm finding it keeps inconsistent time; sometimes it will go fast and other times it seems to keep exactly the right time. Anyhow I'd rather not have to pay that much to have it serviced again so am wondering if there's anything I can do myself? I'm more concerned of whether it needs oiling than the time inconsistencies.
