There was a noisy demonstration approaching. Horses have great hearing and left alone would run away. So apart from dealing with idiot tourists who think it is a petting zoo, there are screaming shouting demonstrators getting nearer and louder.

Horses are a prey animal. Their first defense and chosen response is RUN !! The guard did a great job of watching his horses body language and acting accordingly. Stupid tourists not withstanding. I love watching the last few seconds, that horse was really attuned to the action down the street. When I’m out working and my horse sees something that catches his attention, I have to ease him back to focus on the work at hand, and at 16 hands in height, I’m not going to force him. “Yes, yes I see a big ‘ol tumbleweed blowing down range, but let’s look at all those cattle over there that need TO GO THE OTHER WAY !! “. Please with extra sorghum on your feed tonight?!?!

This would not be necessary if you had put out barriers in front of these poor animals that have to be manhandled all day. With hands in their faces all day. Get with it people. The person in charge of the horses should be fired immediately. He has no idea how to have the horses safety taken care off.
