SpaceX Revealed Starship to Become NEW NASA Space Station...
The International Space Station is approaching the end of its remarkable journey, and the race to build its successor is heating up. One of the top contenders, SpaceX, has a bold and groundbreaking proposal: transforming their iconic Starship spacecraft into an extraordinary new space station.
How revolutionary is this concept?
Let’s dive into today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
As mentioned, the International Space Station (ISS), which has been a cornerstone of space research for 24 years, is approaching its retirement. When this happens, China’s Tiangong station may stand alone as the sole operational space station—a potential setback for the U.S. in the ongoing space race. To prevent this, NASA is actively pursuing a successor to the ISS.
SpaceX Revealed Starship to Become NEW NASA Space Station...
Through unfunded Space Act Agreements and the Collaborations for Commercial Space Capabilities-2 (CCSC-2) initiative, NASA has partnered with seven U.S. companies to address future commercial and governmental needs, including the creation of a next-generation space station. The companies selected for CCSC-2 are Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, Sierra Space, Special Aerospace Services, ThinkOrbital, Vast Space, and, of course, SpaceX.
SpaceX Revealed Starship to Become NEW NASA Space Station...
Unlike other contenders aiming to build stations from scratch, SpaceX proposes a bold and unconventional solution: using its Starship spacecraft as the foundation for a new space station.
Supported by its broader ecosystem—including Super Heavy, Dragon, and Starlink—Starship would serve as a multi-functional low-Earth orbit (LEO) destination, handling crew and cargo transportation, communications, and ground operations.
Though unconventional, this concept is not entirely new. Historically, there have been proposals to repurpose components like external fuel tanks into space stations. Upon closer examination, Starship offers several key advantages that make it a promising candidate for this transformation.

To be resolved, thank you.

Lets see.. NASA has only had 30 years to come up with a replacement...so cut them some slack.

I don't think we should call any new space stations the ISS. If it's going to be a uniquely American space station it should be called the USSS, United States Space Station🎉

20 years cost us 150 billion. 2 years of proxy war cost us 240 billion. Which one do you think was a better ROI?

Bravo SpaceX, for these new space station developments ! 👏👏👏👏👏💯🚀

I've heard that Musk is confident it'll be ready for launch early 2025. Amazing! Is there anything that man can't do?!

The rocket just needs a plug in at the nose. That will allow 2 or 4 more docking ports if needed. There are a lot of work around's. No modifications needed to the rocket. Also the rocket is tethered at the nose for Artificial gravity. Star Ships internal structures are not designed to be pulled on the side. Star Ship is routinely lifted by the nose and that's how it will be tethered for artificial gravity while in orbit.

I have a question the blow up sections that have being tested how big a station could a starship support 🧐🧐🧐

Considering Elon and Spacex’s accomplishment in this area, engineering ingenuity, and relentless work ethic, understand. ♥️

Have a Starship custom built that has a detachable back end and front end. The center is the station modules. One becomes damaged, fly up a replacement and land then damaged one.

This would be a big engineering challenge, but spacex has done things more difficult than this.

Days long interplanetary travel? Do you know something we don't?

All of the the external components can be attach in orbit... The starship just needs docking ports for connection... but the solar panels can be send up separately and attach in orbit!

You could connect two or three starships together and rent out rooms. Put a big Trump sign on it

Was Skylab (1973) originally this same basic idea? I love it!

SpaceX could send up a complete station all at once including a crew .

Once spacex really gets the starship program off the ground, how big of a jump would it be to have the tank and engine section break away and return to earth? The crew and cargo sections could still have it’s own attitude maintenance engines and get occasional boosts from crew dragons or other craft. This would reduce the cost of the station even more dramatically and solve the “what do we do with the rest of it?” Problem.
They could also possibly build station specific tank sections that already have a lot of the lean infrastructure built into them. Like brackets, doors and docking ports. Then in orbit they can purge the tanks, turn on life support and start building it from the inside out.

Everyone we should Boost the space station into the SUN!
Starship could help and We get a ton of data and great video!

I stil would like to see SpaceX use that billion dollars to make a Starship into a space tug and loft the ISS to a garage orbit, just outside of GEO. Put a few Optimus on it for maintenance or ongoing experiments.

Redesigning a Starship with the minimum fuel tanks size to enable Starship to reach the destined orbit around Earth this would then increase the maximum space for the Space Station area of Starship 🙂 This type of Starship Space Station would be able to orbit Earth, Moon and Mars by using other Starship types to attach to the Space Station to transport it to the Moon and Mars orbits 🙂

They should just make a version of the starship that disconnects the tank section and can hook together with other starships or like a t connector for multiple.

SpaceX has the exterior covered a company like Vast can focus on interior. Shared development expertise can yield unrealized benefits in speed and quality of project. Another candidate is Tesla's Optimus robots may be the first traveler on the Moon Demo Landing. What is Sierra Space up to these day's? I am hoping Blue Horizon have some success.
