Queen Victoria and her consort Albert have one of the most fascinating stories in English history. Victoria came to the throne at only 18, after a sheltered childhood. The handsome Albert of Saxe Coburg was an instant attraction for Victoria, who admired his kindness and intellect. With Victoria’s power and Albert’s cunning, the two created a more technologically advanced England. Sadly, Albert died at the young age of 42, leaving Victoria with 9 children and deep in mourning. England, growing to the height of its size, still flourished despite a withdrawn Queen. Today, we’ll revisit the tragic love story, and of course talk about what Victoria and Albert really looked like, along with re-creations of them young, before photography.

I cannot imagine outliving the love of your life for around 40 years. It’s beyond painful.

It’s interesting how they are one of the first historical figures to transition from portraits to early photography.

Princess Beatrice of York is very much Victoria’s likeness many generations later. It’s quite stunning.

Sounds like Albert was a total babe, and not because of his looks but intellect, compassion and progressiveness. He also brought out the best in his wife, and I can see why she heartbroken when he passed away.

Everything I've ever read about Prince Albert has convinced me that he was a very good man. Of course, Queen Victoria must have loved him very much. I've heard that quote from her diary after their wedding night before and it's always struck me how she wrote that she had never even hoped to feel as much love and affection as he showed her. It's both a sad clue to how deprived of love her childhood had been, but also a clue to just how wonderful Albert must have been. It was 1840 after all, and one can't help but think that perhaps not every new bride felt as positively about the wedding night after it took place. The reigning sexism and misogyny of the time, the lack of sex education, and especially among the royal and aristocratic classes, the push to marry who was "suitable", rather than the choice of your heart, probably affected many marriages negatively. They were fortunate that they were able to form such a partnership that was both suitable as far as society was concerned but also based on real love and affection.

It was so heartwarming to see the entries of her meeting Albert and of their marriage. The sheer joy!
Also, I have to give props to her, going out the very next day after an assassination attempt, using herself to draw them out.

I can see todays Princess Beatrice in the young Queen Victoria. I think you managed to keep the intelligence and sensitivity in Albert’s eyes. He looks like someone who would be easy to warm to in conversation.

There was one book I read, when she and Albert had a bad falling out, Albert shut himself into his room, Victoria knocked on the door, he said " Who is it ?" Victoria said " The Queen of England let me in " Albert didn't. She went away and came back, knocked again. She said " Albert it's your little wife ." Albert then quickly answered the door and took her into his arms.

I have read every biography of Queen Victoria and she is one of my favorite historical characters. The pictures of Albert and Victoria celebrating Christmas did much to influence how it is celebrated today, especially in using the Christmas tree. Albert was a man ahead of his time, and I can't help but wonder if he had lived longer he might have influenced the course of European history and maybe prevented World War I. His quiet diplomacy may have been the cause of keeping England out of the American Civil War. Look up the Trent Affair for more information.

I can see why she fell for Albert so quickly. 😍 She famously hated pregnancy, childbirth, and babies, but she loved the process of creating those babies, hence the 9 children. 🤣

If only we could be so lucky to find a man as loving and as doting as Albert.
He truly understood her.

The now Princess Beatrice of York is the spitting image of Queen Victoria who is her grandmother 5 times removed . I loved this true love story & likenesses. Thank you.

She also was a crocheter, having crocheted many of the pieces that graced the table in their homes for years. I crochet now for the last 41 years and still think with pride that I now use the craft of a Queen. Oh to pick her brain for patterns 🥹🥰

I have a suggestion for a re-creation: Elisabeth Empress of Austria. Incredibly fascinating character, very influential and a stunning beauty (there are photographs that kind of confirm that they did not have to beautify her in the portraits).

In one of the realist portraits, Bertie looks like his father. I couldn’t see it before, but now I can. Also, Princess Beatrice looks very much like a young Victoria.

Her story broke my heart. When you talked about the love between them and when he passed I came so close to tears.
