A few people have asked why we can’t use powder inside our historic properties. This is an excellent question. Powder particles are extremely small and travel considerable distances without being seen. They can bond to or abrade the surfaces of our collections and cause lasting damage. For the same reasons, we don’t permit hairspray or any aerosols at all to be used in our properties. As a conservation charity, we do everything in our power to prevent and manage the deterioration of our fantastic collections and delicate interiors.

I like how the model is clearly making grocery lists in her head when the historians are talking lol

I love the idea, that Queen Victoria collected ‚antique lace‘. So even back then, people were into ‚vintage‘ 😀

My grandmother used rice powder as her only makeup. She had to grind and powder it herself, it was all she could afford.

It's mad how much of this is still relevant and how many of these ingredients and products are still used today

I really wish they would have included a hair tutorial as part of this video. It would have been fascinating to know more about the history of early Victorian hairstyles.

I don’t know why nobody’s talking about Amber’s clothes and how it looks like a anime school girl’s uniform 😂

Is no one going to talk about how careful and gentle the makeup artist is while doing the hair and makeup? So relaxing.

I really enjoy Amber Butchart as both a presenter and educator. Her style of presentation is honest, informed, intuitive and very personable. If English Heritage reads this, then please give Amber a pat on the back from me! What a great find, English Heritage! p.s. I'm an educator myself, and have used some of these particular video's in my classes as they really inspire young children. Thank you!

In the last clips of the model as a young Queen Victoria, I just love how her whole demeanor, especially her facial expression, changes as she goes from just plain, modern street clothes to the nostalgic elegance of the costume. She looks radiant! It just goes to show that there is truth in (and I can relate) the concept of "looking better to feel better". There's just something that happens to your emotional state, posture, facial expressions and simply how you carry yourself when you put on a bit of makeup, do your hair and put on your best dress. I would dress like this all the time if it was socially acceptable to walk out of the house in a big dress and a tiara on my head!
