The devs have said moonlord is Cthulhu’s brother and the cultist are actually trying to stop moonlords arrival but that’s contradictory to what the game says so take it with a Grain of salt

Theory: the pillars are sent by Chtulu/Moonlord as a way to conqour the workd safely hence the connection to celestial bodies, most likely because He is still bot at his max potential.

I do like the idea that the Lunatic Cultist was behind the major events of the game, needing to de-stabilize the world by killing its guardian and causing the spirits of light and dark to go crazy. That, or the chosen one knew the only way to truly save their world and stop the Moon Lord was to effectively wipe the board clean. As for the pillars, I like to imagine it was part of the ritual to summon the Moon Lord, generating enough power to bring him to the world. And much like when you defeat the Lunatic Cultist, when you defeat the pillars, it's too late. The Moon Lord is ready to conquer this world. Hence the "Impending Doom approaches"
