The $5 a day wasn't all cash in hand, about 35% was in form of benefits. On top of that, there were people who checked up on you, that you were a good citizen being responsible with your money. Even with $5 a day, there were 12 hour workdays, the work was hard, physically demanding, dangerous and you had to work as fast as you could go, what came to be known as the sweatshop. The $5 a day also works out to only about $14.50 an hour in todays money
