What you just described as masculinity and what makes a man is is actually what makes any good human being.

So i was an addict. A BAD ONE. I was homeless for a long time, went to the nɛɛdle, all that type of stuff during my 20s. When i finally got myself clean, it only lasted for a year. After that, i stayed off the street and worked, but I kept it up secretly. My girl was clean, of course, and she either didn't know or was just trying to give me the emotional space to get through it. During that time, i got her pregnant.

Then, out of nowhere, one day, I became a dad, and when I held her all of a sudden, the chains that were keeping me down didn't seem quite so strong. I found strength in the responsibility and duty to my new family. My daughter will be 6 in Nov, and I'll be 6 years clean on her birthday.

So I left that way of living behind that day and embraced Dad life. My life has never been better. I have to be a good example. I eat well, I work out, and she's never seen me drunk or high. An “obligation” is not always a bad thing. In fact, for some of us, it's a life saver. It's sad that I have to say this, but this doesn't mean a kid will “fix” your problems. It won't. That's up to you. And I didn't do it on my own, I had an amazing woman by my side, who also stood up and took on motherhood, and she inspires me just as i inspire her.

Sometimes, we just need a reason.

You nailed it kiddo. Sometimes it seems like a life long hard scrabble fight too. Some problems are hard to overcome but a man stays in the fight.

I very purposefully said the generational crap stops with me, I hug my kids (now adults with kids of their own) I tell them I love them. I supported them 100% in the chosen career paths, and I'm proud of them. Their up bringing was nothing like mine and I am happy for them

This is great Brett. Spot on!!! I am working through this in my life presently. Trying to be the father and husband I did not have/see growing up.

Overcoming our animal desires, our sins, having sexual restraint, having self control, living by moral code to show obedience, discipline, righteousness… These are all things that are important for all of humanity, not just men. Women also.

This is not "being a man" or "Being masculine". What youve described is simply being a good person. Everyone, men and women, should strive for this.

It's being Aragorn. I saw a video saying he is the definition of true masculinity and I have to agree. He is a great leader and always honest. He loves his friends and is not afraid to show it. He's not afraid to take on an entire pack of Uruk-hai by himself just to buy Frodo more time, always willing to put himself at risk for the sake of others. He has a strong will, and we all know that he's the actual main character, Frodo just got lucky. In the lore after the events of Lord of The Rings he went on to rule his kingdom. His reign lasted 120 years before he passed away at 210. He rebuilt Gondor's glory and restored Minas Tirath's former glory.
So men, if you need male role model, just look at Aragorn.
Funny note, I went to the comments of that video and the first one said "Instructions unclear, I now have an army."

What I learnt from my dad . Is being the head of the Family on the outside but at home letting your wife make most of the important decisions.... It's choosing your family instead of your friend group or extended family

I wouldn’t tie this to just men. It just straight up generally good advice for everyone.

Important to mention it’s sometimes failing. Being a man is about being able to show grace and authenticity in your whole self while recognizing your shortcomings ya but it doesn’t always work out. Bad days come and good people lose even when they do everything right. Those days make even the best of us into monsters and imperfect. You still try anyways, get back up, and move forward and try again anyways.

Great vid! I'm loving the additional comments. I agree that a real man is humble enough to recognize his shortfalls and strong enough to sacrifice his own desires to make himself better for his family. But a real man is a leader in his family. He works with his wife, equally yoked to get the life jobs and fun done. However they choose to divide, *he* in the end, sees that it gets done.

To be a man is to be strong & gentle in their proper contexts. Protecting the innocent, loving your lady, playing with your children (and disciplining them), humble.... So much more I could say to this but that's a start

Being a man seems to be associated with just doing the right thing. Strange how that’s more expected of the male gender than female one though…
