Listen to the official audio for Ben Rector’s song “What Makes A Man” with @thomasrhettmusic

“I immediately thought of Thomas Rhett when ‘What Makes A Man’ was finished. A big part of this record for me was wanting to do things that were exciting and enjoyable, and having Thomas on this song felt like both.

I’m honored he agreed to sing on it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Stay tuned for a deluxe version of ‘The Joy of Music’ (including this song), later this year.”

Lyrics:

Well my father
He'll never see his name in lights
Worked at a desk his whole damn life
Didn’t chase his dream gave himself
So me and my sisters would be all right

Sometimes I wonder
What they'll say of me when I am gone
When my daughter’s living on and
Will she care if strangers thought that I was famous
Or just that I was never home

Is it the things you’ve done the places that you've been
Chasing down some dream you’ve been imagining
Or is it making peace with who you are and where you stand
I’m trying to find what makes a man
Woah oh what makes a man

If I'm honest
I am plagued by the fear that I am not enough
So I work hard to measure up
Spent a million miles under mountains high
And felt the same when I was done

Is it the things you’ve done the places that you've been
Chasing down some dream you’ve been imagining
Or is it making peace with who you are and where you stand
I’m trying to find what makes a man

Is it power
Is it fame
Is it money
Is it just a game
Is it always wanting more
Or is it finding peace in what you had all along

Is it the things you’ve done the places that you've been
Chasing down some dream you’ve been imagining
Or is it making peace with who you are and where you stand
I'm trying to find what makes a man

I've been trying to find
What makes a man
I've been trying to find
What makes a man

What makes a man
I've been trying to find
What makes a man

Ben's songs are not just catchy melodies with words, they are profound words in beautiful melodies.

In terms of songwriting, I am growing in increasing favor of Ben being the Carole King of his generation.
- Consistent songs that resonate with life,
- Consistent melodic tunes and structure,
- Consistent connection with fans and shows that are unforgettable.

Listened to it three times:
1st: to appreciate the melody, tune, and vocal style
2nd: to understand and reflect on the lyrics
3rd: to play on repeat whenever possible 💜

Real men still hit thier knees to God's Holy sovereignty. They stand for what they truly believe and live love passionately.

Ben - You've hit the point where you're asking THE questions, about life and love and what it means to be "successful" in these times. Like George Carlin, and others who have come before...you reach a point where you're asking deep and pointedly important questions...but nobody answers your questions because they are THE questions. Love your music. Looking forward to the next 20 years of music.

Ben, I love all the songs you’ve been putting out. I’m only a couple years younger than you with a young daughter. All these songs give words to how I’m feeling.

My husband just added this to our morning play list. So relatable and heart warming. Really thought-provoking as to what really is important in our life. Thank you for such a beautiful contribution.

Throughout human existence we have all been searching for purpose. When you are gone, your only lasting impact will be the memories, laughter and conversations that you had with the ones around you. Love as hard as you can

I was recently sitting in a coffee shop in a small town and this song was playing in their Spotify playlist. I think whenever I hear this song I’ll think about that small town coffee shop

And, as has become tradition when a new Ben Rector song drops, I'm replaying immediately

Love your videos about being a Father. My wife made me a father's day video with my son to "a love like this" (I think that's what it's called).

My daughter is 2 years old and every morning she asks "play daughter now" and I put it on and we slow dance. I'm pretty sure that will be our daddy daughter dance when she gets married.

Thanks for creating these songs about being a Father. I love them

I'm happy for Ben. I have long been a fan of his music since the days he was on the October Baby soundtrack.

There's a handful of songs in my life that are so touching and profound that i'm just so thankful they were written. This is one of them.

Sometimes it's hard to encapsulate the feeling and love you have for your father while also trying to express your concerns of your own faults and fallies without insulting the former. You guys nailed it.

First saw you visit my college back in 2010, then with Needtobreathe in 2011 (or 2012) - thanks for all the years of amazing music.
