What if LEGISLATOR (Representative; Senator) was a COMMUNITY SERVICE position,
with no salary, no perks, no legal immunity, etc., and with term limits of 4 years max in total?
And what if a politician lying during his/her campaign, and/or while in office, was a FELONY?
Would that help, even a little, to reduce bribery, corruption, and dishonesty, among politicians?

Speaking of local bribery, corruption, dishonesty, and politicians, how many folks know about this:
During NOV-DEC 1886 King Kalakaua used an intermediary named Junius Kaae to solicit BRIBES
from local Chinese men ("Aki" Tong Kee and Chung Lung) in exchange for a license to sell OPIUM.

First it was offered to Aki for $75, 000 and he paid for it. Next it was sold to Chung for $80, 000.
When Aki found out that he didn't get the license, and he didn't get his money back, he squealed.

Aki's "whistle blower" information was published in Honolulu newspapers, leading to a trial in court

vs. A. J. Cartwright et al., trustees of the King (Haw. Rep., Vol. vii., p 401)].

This monarchy government scandal was JUST ONE OF MANY
that sparked the local revolution of 1887, and the so-called "Bayonet Constitution" that resulted thereafter.
