The brilliance of Ricky Gervais is that he can have you howling with laughter one minute, them in floods of tears the next. Extras, Derek, and Afterlife are all testament to this.
The man really is a genius.

I've had three friends die in car accidents (yes, plural).
I've had friends never return home from international wars (Afghanistan and similar).
I've had friends pass away from terminal cancer....
but God almighty ....2:05.... it makes me cry more than all of these other times. I swear it's the music!
Gervais just knows what to do.

The whole monologue is pure gold, the facial expressions and the montage scenes are also incredible, but the cherry on the top for me is the line “not because he [Derek] is better than me, because EVERYONE IS BETTER than me… because he [Derek] makes me feel better, because HE IS BETTER THAN EVERYONE”
Such a brilliant line that summarizes the true feelings of Kev about himself and about his best (and probably only) friend. Derek is one of those shows that I keep praying that the mainstream don’t find because I like to think that is a gem that only few people will apreciate
