My favourite Bonhoeffer observation is his theory of stupidity. He postulated that stupidity is not an intellectual failure, it is moral failure. He thought that we are more defenseless against stupidity than evil because no argument can penetrate.

“Whatever God you have in mind is smaller than the government.”
Brother, thank you. That hit hard. Lord help us to trust Him over men.
I will certainly watch this movie after hearing your synopsis.

That is not a tough question. Every real Christian asks God for forgiveness. We all sin and we all need forgiveness. It's a core aspect of the faith.

Greg,

Thank you so much for your thoughts and the atmosphere you are fostering. Too many people are placing their trust on politicians as if they are messianic heroes when, in reality, they are just as flawed and broken as we are.

Every time I see people outsource their thinking, it reminds me of Liet Kynes' death scene in the desert "No more terrible disaster could befall your people than for them to fall into the hands of a Hero"

You keep adding to my book list, Greg, and I really appreciate it! Grumpy old man moment: I feel like one of our biggest problems in society these days is we have no rudder and just tend to live in the moment. With your help I'm leaning into religion/spirituality more these days and I believe it's helping me and my family. Thank you my friend.

Excellent video, Greg! I truly appreciate your honest take on current matters of faith and politics. The deification of political leaders is nothing new but is nonetheless a problem. I think people are especially avoidant with the subject right now because they see the “other side” presenting Trump as “literally Hitler” and so feel the need to lean into the opposite extreme. Or at least to not give any critiques that they feel might be used against him. The reality is that side-taking to that extent dumbs down both sides and does a disservice to America as a whole. Just as Christians ought to be the first to critique the direction of the church and hold it accountable, conservatives ought to be the first to critique our own candidates and hold them accountable. To do otherwise is cowardly.

Bonhoeffer was a brilliant theologian. One of the reasons he was so comfortable changing from respect the government to plotting to assassinate Hitler was he held to the philosophy of graded absolutism. He believed that when moral absolutes were in conflict there would be one that was of greater importance to follow and it would be sinful to follow the other. So he would have no problem lying to protect Jews because protecting their lives was the greater moral good. In fact, he would view it as sinful to not lie in that scenario.

Historical Fact: *This heroic Christian pastor also participated and was executed for assisting Operation Valkryie's July 20 plot*

As a centrist liberal who follows your channel, awesome review. I always admire when you're willing to ruffle feathers on your side as it makes you ruffling feathers on my side, more valid.

Excellent reminder that we follow Christ alone. To what degree people align with that, we get behind them, but never follow them- He alone is the example.

I have been waffling on whether or not I should read The Cost of Discipleship because I bought it for my father, who is a pastor, and when I flipped through it, it seemed dense and a bit complicated. You just sold me on picking up a copy. I mean, I managed to get through, and enjoy, St. Augustine's Confessions so it can't be as bad as that.

My Pastor had a sermon before the election about how God is still king and is the one who puts the people in roles of leadership for His kingdom and brought up some amazing points about the kings of the old testament. There are 3 kinds of leaders.

Ones like David and Josiah who loved God with all their heart and were good leaders, not perfect but good.

Ones like Ahab who were straight up evil and could be seen as an early day Hitler in a way.

And ones like Uzziah who followed God but still didn't fully obey God. But we're great leaders for the people.

My Pastor never brought up the politics of the people running or picked a side or even said which kind of ruler either party would be, but he made really good points.

God places people in power, we don't know why all the time, but they are there for a reason and His purpose.

I agree that many Americans are looking at Trump like he's a David when personal I see a Uzziah. Has a lot of room to grow and really needs Jesus, but I feel it a good choice for the ("kingdom") economy

This video, man. Not only did I get a review of something I've never even heard of, and am now fascinated to research and know more about, I got criticisms on Donald Trump that have never even really occurred to me, because I've never paid that much attention to the religious side of who he is. 11 minutes well spent.

Keep up the good work, Greg.

Good point to be raised:

Trump is not literally Hitler; he is also not literally Jesus.

Excellent video and thank you for your thoughts towards the end. There’s a right way to criticize Christian nationalism and a wrong way and this was the right way

"I'll probably see you at Christmas service... and again at Easter, I bet." SIR, you didn't need to wound these children like that.

But seriously, it's part of why I appreciate you. Even when approaching political issues, you're quite well-spoken in a way that cuts between political divides and culture wars. That's very refreshing; we need more of that.

It's nice to see not all American Christians are mesmerized by Trump, and actually put God in the highest position in their life instead
