I once attended a Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa. Severals soldiers in Cadpat were standing motionless in front of some trees at the monument. I stood less than 30m from them. All that stood out were their heads, as if they floated in mid air, as their bodies blended into the greenery behind them. It was uncanny.
The pattern is proprietary and the copyright is very strongly enforced. That's one major reason why aftermarket Cadpat products are hard to find new.

When I was in the Canadian Army reserve I did a joint escape and evasion ex with the US National Guard at the SERE school outside Spokane. There were times where I was 50M away and I had to wave my arms for my team to spot me, meanwhile the Americans were practically glowing in UCP. The USAF instructors in the old Woodlands uniforms were much more concealed!

Anyone who plays Squad can attest that the Canadians are fecking impossible to spot in that damn game.

Can confirm, they are very strict about the uniform. I know of a store that sells surplus military uniforms and other legal gear. One time I saw what appeared to be a CADPAT in the back of their store when the door was open to their extra stock, and I asked about it, and they said basically that someone traded it in, but when they realized it after the fact that it was the real deal, they realize that they couldn't sell it because doing so would be illegal. So it was basically hanging there ever since, because they couldn't do anything with it except return it to the Canadian military itself, basically.

So if you happen to own a CADPAT uniform, it is either a knockoff of the real thing, or you are or got it from a veteran. You can't legally source these otherwise.

Having worked with some Canadians, CADPAT is very much a “works in its niche and not outside it” type camo. Dudes always stuck out around everyone else in the more versatile and muted cammies (was a mix of polish, US, UK, and Canadians)

I love digi cami patterns cuz they seem so futuristic yet dated to a very specific time period (the early 00s) at the same time.

The Canadian Army is now getting a new CADPAT, basically the same pattern but now in multicam colours. Instead of just switching camouflage they want to "keep it uniquely Canadian"

We actually licensed the pattern style to the Marine Corps to allow them to create MARPAT.

I was gonna say - I would deer hunt in northern WI as a kid, and we would use this pattern because the local ARMY NAVY store had a bunch of jackets for cheap. Id wear the CAD PAT jacket, and some orange carhart pants.

Unfortunately the jackets in the pants on the uniforms tend to colour fade at different speeds so you end up with a much darker jacket and lighter pants or the other way around

In fairness to Marpat, the Marine Corps actually worked with the Canadians in developing Marpat.

in 2019 the Canadian Armed Forces issued the multi terrain pattern of CADPAT (CADPAT MT) which probably the Canadian response to Multicam that frequently used nowadays. the first time i looked the CADPAT MT i thought that's a woodland MARPAT until i realized it doesn't

I like how your content has evolved dude, subbed for the "I know what I got" boomer shenanigans, stayed for the genuinely interesting and informative stuff.

All the best mate, love the camo too.

When playing Squad, this camo is rather similar to the Russian camo due to the dark green tones and as a result, Canada vs Russia games in woodland environments often result in a disproportionate amount of friendly fire, or the occasional guy that is running around with the wrong side. IRL, I doubt such a thing would happen due to all of the communications and identification systems implemented since the 90s, but still something I though would be interesting to share.

Honestly it works very well in the Canadian outdoors
