'Katara Becoming A Waterbending Master Makes NO SENSE'

A lot of people seem to think Katara becoming a master waterbending in Avatar the last airbender makes no sense but I disagree. Katara has always had massive potential (being the one to get Aang out of the iceberg as a novice) but also, team avatar spent a good amount of time at the northern water tribe.

I imagine she is just one of the few that uses water bending for actual combat regularly. On top of being gifted, hard working, meeting the right people at the right time and that experience i dont see why not

I never took Pakku calling her a master to mean she was a true master and his equal at that point, just that she had mastered the mentality of change/fluidity/adaptability in waterbending and was capable of being Aang's master and that she would one day be Pakku's equal in strength too. And she doesn't become strong overnight, she and all the gaang had to fight for thier lives from the moment they left the southern water tribe, and they continue to have to long after leaving the northern water tribe so she gets better and better and better.

Also, Pakku said she was more dedicated then most. She was probably training 24/7 since they weren't walking around nor she needed to help Aang during that period bc he also had a teacher, she could just focus on herself.

Aaand noone complains about Sokka learning how to fight with a sword in one day

I thought they were there for around 6 weeks due to the moons we see (the waning crescent in the water bending master and the full moon in the siege of the north). 2 weeks is too short for her level of progress imo, 6 makes sense. I think the gaang stay in the Northern Water Tribe for a little while after the siege too, continuing to train. Then Katara also has all the time after leaving the northern water tribe to continue her training. Her bending from the end of book 1 to the end of book 2 improves dramatically, it’s just not as noticeable because she could barely do anything at the start of book 1, so moving large amounts of water in the siege of the north looks super impressive. She was also training religiously under a master during this time, so it makes sense for her bending to improve faster than it has before. During the siege Zuko did beat her very easily as soon as the sun rose, but at the end of book 2, she was beating Azula until Zuko stepped in. Then at the end of book 3 she defeated Azula during sozin’s comet. Her progress continued through all three books, it was just expedited because she trained under Pakku.

I thought it was clear that they spent more than 2 days in the northern water tribe, don't know how much exactly but at least more than a couple weeks. Those people didn't watxh the show properly

The fandom seems to undermine the power of one’s mind and dedication. From what I understood from the series, Katara was practicing her bending almost every day. It seems like a perfect progression for her character to become a master. I always say that talent plays a very little role in being good at something. Most of it is just determination and hard work 😊

Raw talent (potential) and hanging out with aang(competitive scaling) creates increased growth rate.

Also the fact during war and crisis after constant use of a skill of under duress some people can learn way faster than others would typically.

People like to say the same thing about Aang, that he hadn't really mastered water bending, earth bending, or fire bending by the time he faced Ozai, but where even is the line between being a master and just being really good? All we know is that airbenders get their tattoos, but what do the others nations do?

If I had to guess, I think you would automatically have be considered a master if you have begun learning a sub-bending discipline like metal bending, lightning generation, or blood bending.

I have never heard this criticism for the original show, only the Netflix adaptation – for which it really does hold true.
The fact that they spent a lot of time in Agna Qel’a was patently obvious to me even as a kid.

People also forget that she had a genuine hunger for knowledge and skill. When you're that dedicated to learning, you can learn things at a quicker rate than normal. As the video says, they were probably at the north a bit longer than we suspect, and I genuinely imagine katara up at all hours of the day just training, especially if she knows it's not just for her, it's for Aang too. She was borderline obsessed with becoming a better waterbender and we see that as early as the first episode.

Sokka and Yue FELL IN LOVE in less time than Katara had, obviously they were jumping around

I thought most people knew each episode doesn't equal one day. XD

Katara’s ability is far different from aang’s. Katara had to self teach the basics to herself and build from there, Pakuu and the northern style was the key that allowed her to move on to more advanced techniques and ideas way quicker than Aang. Aang was in a different boat where he had skipped the basics because it was similar enough to airbending that he could get away with just learning a move her or there, but wasn’t good as making his own until Katara trained him again in season 2. Also, yes, the had to been up at the Northern Water Tribe for at least a week before the invasion.

Friendly reminder than unlike the Live-Action, in the cartoon she trained a lot BEFORE reaching the water temple.

As far as I remember, the whole Legend of Aang is condensed into less than a year. Aang becomes master enough of 3 elements in that time. Katara is working with and training Aang for months before reaching the Northern Water Tribe, they're there for at least a couple of weeks, and I've always assumed her innate affinity for waterbending was somewhere between Toph's and Zuko's for Earth and Fire respectively. She also had to basically pretend she didn't have waterbending most of the time until she met Aang, meaning her growth was stunted but not stopped. Months of working with someone and actively using her skills in life or death situations (at least a weekly occurrence, if not more frequently) helped her excel, then being trained by a real master would have sky-rocketed her from barely being able to control waterbending to being good enough to be called a master by a tough master that has a soft spot for her. Legit master or not, Katara earned her title and she's a master to me

I always assume that in shows that things go on longer then what you see on screen I always assumed they were at the northern water tribe for around a month which would give enough time to mobilize the army and enough time for Katara to master waterbending

Well the timeline ranges from the season of Fall to summer. They really only knew each other for about a year in the show. It’s hard to track down the timeline because weather and location is sporadic in this show. But Fall to the end of summer seems to be enough of a gap of time for all the events. Their time at the North Pole probably was about 2 weeks worth. However long it was, it was no longer than a month, it was very brief.
