Schmitt makes an extremely valid point. When his character was first introduced Meredith used him as a human blood bag during surgery. If a person has healthy blood, they should be allowed to donate. Sexual orientation shouldn't be an excuse to reject someone trying to help. If I was sick/dying and in need of blood, I'd gladly take it from anyone regardless of who they share a bed with.

what pisses me off the most is that the FDA even reduced the limit from 6 months to 3 months because of the pandemic and the national blood shortage. it's like, our blood is absolutely no different from straight people's blood, yet even during a literal blood shortage, you still won't just let us donate our blood??? it's so discriminatory and it's infuriating

I love how half this episode is doctors trying to convince Bailey to allow them to do illegal things.

schmitt is right that the laws/regulations about this are wrong and unfair and immoral.
but at the same time, bailey can't risk getting the hospital in trouble for breaking those laws/regulations.

It's simply appalling that anyone shouldn't be allowed to donate blood (a life-saving practice) based on whom they sleep with.

My mom wanted myself and her to donate plasma, because they will pay you for it. I kindly had to tell her that I couldn’t donate as a sexually active gay man it was illegal for me and that I’d never be able to realistically donate. So that was a fun talk.

As much as this story may be important, it just felt so misplaced to me in the grander scheme of the whole epsiode. Maybe if they dedicated a whole episode or at least made it the B-story

so everyone let’s not forget how Bailey went against medical protocol AND parent refusal to put deactivated HIV cells into an underage child. She can break the rules when she feels in the right but everyone forgets about that when she is scolding them. That would be my first come back if I were Meredith or Owen. (Not that I agree with either of their actions)
