I think the red mitten thinggamajigs are meant to be worn under your coat so when you take your mittens off you dont lose them. I know some moms improvised a similar set up with a ribbon (or yarn) to prevent lost mittens. I think it was called a mitten garter or mitten suspender...🤔 or something like that.
