Grease: The diner scene

Danny (John Travolta), is on a date with Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) at the diner. He tries to hide from the T Birds and the Pink Ladies. Kenickie (Jeff Conaway) and Rizzo (Stockard Channing) crash the romantic time of the two lovers and the rest of the gang comes along.

For all of Danny's fears and submission to peer pressure and his friends opinions, they didn't seem to mind his hanging out with Sandy and seemed to welcome her pretty easily to the group.

Obviously sandy doesn't understand the pressure of popularity because Danny keeps on looking at his group and telling sandy that he doesn't do tea or parents. He feels like he's gonna lose his group or popularity if he accepts.

I kinda wish people would stop talking about how the cast were a lot older than their roles. Maybe they were, but somehow it still works, so can we just forget about it and enjoy the film?!

People will laugh when I say this because they don't think of good acting when they think of Grease, but man the acting in this scene is obviously scripted but oh so natural at the same time. There are 11 characters at one point in this scene and they all have something to do and seem involved in the wide shots. Watch Kinicky and Danny. There's a lot going on. I wonder how much improv they were allowed. Really underrated acting and directing, this is how you shoot a group scene. Also, RIP Olivia!

Scorecard for Kenickie this scene:

1) Interrupts.
2) Promptly burps, pisses off Danny. I'm sure his breath smelled terrific.
3) Unceremoniously yanks a table over, grunts loudly, and sits his ass down - without an invite.
4) Makes a snide remark to his girlfriend that pisses her off also.
5) Again without asking, picks up Marty's wallet and starts going through it, pissing her off as well.
6) Makes a condescending remark to Doodie.
7) Then promptly bums a cigarette, despite the fact that he already has one tucked behind his right ear.
8) Before he can even light it, makes another smartass comment directed at his girlfriend.
9) As soon as the food is placed on the table, without even asking, he immediately grabs a burger.
10) Makes a self-aggrandizing comment that falls flat as a pancake.
11) Then takes a bite out of it, complete with annoying sound effect.
12) Then talks with his mouth full, making another crude comment. Gets called a pig.
13) Dumbly looks around with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
14) For some reason, starts taking onion rings off someone else's plate, tries tossing them onto a straw, fails miserably.

(scene end comes prematurely, as apparently he does as well)

Gotta love how insanely meek Danny is in this scene, especially when he says: "I don't like tea." Haha.
