Frankie Avalon has said that he originally did not want to take on this role because he thought it was too sarcastic. He agreed to take the role when they decided to change the look and feel of the performance from a biker Angel to a messenger dressed in white. He wanted it to be taken as seriously as possible, given the nature of the song. According to him, he has a framed copy of a review article by Liz Smith of the movie, which states that when he appeared on screen at the premiere, the crowd went wild, and when he left the screen, people gave him an ovation.
