At like five, Gohan saw some alien come to earth, beat up his dad, then watched as the alien and his father were both killed by some green guy. Then the green guy kidnapped him and forced him into living off the land like an animal in between abusing him in the sake of training. Then after a year of this, he's forced to fight two other aliens, watching several people die in front of him and his own Gohan feels about Piccolo sacrifice himself to save Gohan. Then is quickly forced to go to another life and death situation after his father saves him from the first two aliens to go to an alien planet to put himself in more harms way, risking himself to help aliens he doesn't know to get magic balls to bring back more people he doesn't know. And Piccolo. Then he's left to believe his father is dead, again, for a while before having to wait for his father to come back home after training with another set of aliens. I can't quite remember if Gohan was there to face Frieza when he came to Earth but that probably didn't help of Gohan was there even if he didn't get to do anything. Regardless, as far as I know he didn't get much of a real break to actually live until the 3 year time skip at the start of the android saga. Then after a small break, has to go deal with all that up until it's time to train with his father alone for a year. Gaining more power. Then against Cell, his father not only decides it's Gohan's time to fight but let's the villian gain more power and heal with a magic bean. After getting his ass handed to him by this weird bug man, he eventually unlocks unrivaled power and for once in his short life is the most powerful person around and can actually fight back and vent all his built up trauma and frustration... And let's it go to his head. His arrogance and anger making him prolong when needed to be done until his desire to draw out the pain on someone else makes said person try and blow up the earth forcing his teleporting father to sacrifice himself again to stop him. And yet self detention still didn't put the green freak down as he came back to kill a friend and just be a nuisance. After killing Perfecter Cell and finally getting peace... After all this... YEAH NO SHIT GOHAN WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH FIGHTING!

People are always calling Gohan a failure for slacking on training and such but in fact he has reached great success
He fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a scholar (yes his dream not Chi-Chi's) and he's raising his own family
This is something futurt Gohan couldn't achieve because of the harsh future
People must remember that even though the MC loves to fight doesn't mean that his children need to follow in that life
Because then they are making the same mistake Goku made against cell

Ye, Z says it all. He's just a gentle soul, hates fighting, even when fate of the world rested on his shoulders against Cell he didn't want to. Then he's pushed into a beast like state then of enjoying the thrill of the hunt. Which then costs him his father, 16, I'm sure the trauma of that is part of it, not wanting to lose control again.

2nd reason Buu Saga, he's made to be the chosen one, all powerful... but then is beaten by Buu, no not just simply beaten. He allowed his kid brother, Trunks to which he knows he trains Trunks in another timeline thanks to Future Trunks, and wasn't beaten but tricked into being absorbed by Buu, which would've cost the universe everything.

Then on top of it all, despite being heralded as this chosen one, his dad swoops in and still saves the day, still surpasses him and only shows to keep getting stronger and no signs of stopping. Not to mention Vegeta always trying to match him.

All that into account, be it Super or GT, it's no wonder why Gohan just gave up, he's mentally and emotionally scarred on multiple levels. Top put cherry on top, why does the world need a failure like him, when it's always had and will have his dad and Vegeta? There's no point or value in it.

Now though he has value, something worth fighting for (even if it was a plot by Piccolo and Pan lol), to protect his baby girl, when his master/2nd dad can't handle the fight, and he almost loses him because he was powerless, refusing to lose anyone anymore he needs to step up and fight this demon head on. The Earth might not always have Goku or Vegeta, so it still needs someone that can protect it, his family needs a protector.
