Показать описание
Have you ever felt invalidated by the people around you? Did you know that there are subtle phrases that seem innocent enough, but can actually be damaging to yourselves and those around you? This is also known as psychological invalidation. It is surprisingly common, to the point that you do this without even realizing it. For the person experiencing this invalidation, they may be unable to trust their own judgment in situations, feel wrong for feeling a certain way and blame themselves for their actions. To better explore what this is and how to remedy it, watch along!

Disclaimer: Please note that context is important in any scenario and that these sayings are not a one size fits all situation. Also, If you can relate to any of these signs, please do not take this feedback as an attack on your character. This video was meant to be a self-improvement guide for those of you who want to be more self-aware.

“Don’t judge someone for the choices they make when you don’t know the options they had to choose from.” 🙏🏽

“I know how you feel” personally gives me comfort. I like to hear someone else so I don’t feel so alone .

I once drove someone to depression by telling them "you wouldn't understand"

I felt horrible for it and apologized the best I could. *How much your words affect others cannot be stressed enough* . please be considerate of feelings.

You forgot one:

"Stop being so dramatic."

That shit makes my blood boil SO HARD.

That moment when you realize everytime you were trying to be supportive and offering a word of encouragement you were actually doing it wrong...😭

My friend in grade 6 used to tell me that I am too sensitive, and she said if I am sensitive I look weak, until this day those words haunts me...

The fact that I say the majority of these things to myself, but would never say it to another person BECAUSE I don’t want to invalidate them and their feelings is ✨astonishing✨.

This explains a lot about my childhood. I have older parents who would always tell us some of these when we had problems. My dad would always give us the "it could be worse" speech and bring up something from his terrible childhood. I know he means well but back then my sister and I felt like we could never be upset because our lives are better than his was. My mom was usually the "let it go" and "it's fine" type of person.

"Let it go" --> my relatives tell me this shit all time. Thanks, but NO. I ain't sweeping the dirt under the rug. I'm dumping it until all in me is clean!

I personally hate “I have/had it worse.” And “This person has the same mental health issue as you but they’re not being a baby about it.” Those are the worst invalidations I’ve had.

"It's all in your head" is just like saying "I don't want to hear/see it out here, so keep it up there."

Another one that I find INCREDIBLY hurtful is "it's all in your head" or "maybe it's just your thoughts and not the reality". It comes to tell that the person's worries are not real or/and unnecessary. Since it's not something they can't comprehend or physicalize easily, they're brushing it off as imagination and say "since the subject doesnt have any proof to be real, hence isn't real, your problem isn't real either"

I may not know exactly how you feel, but I will be always there when you need me. Heartwarming words

'Calm down!' no, don't say that- it makes people feel invalid for being upset. This has happened to me many times. Because of that, I hid my feelings for a while. Don't let it happen to you. Please. Stay safe and take your time with your emotions!💕

What works for me is the simple phrase "I hear you".

It let's the person know that you are listening with empathy and an open heart. Hope this helps someone!
