Not only to Germans, but to all people, it's rude to tell people that their english is poor. Everyone has their own language which they are really fluent at, learning another language and mastering it is a skill.

Regarding the war: In Germany, at least 4 years of history lessons up to the High School Diploma consist only of the period 1900 to 1945. German state television constantly shows documentaries about the Second World War.
When you are abroad, someone always starts talking about the war. Often just stupid comments.
I'm 62 years old and I can't listen to it any more.

We Germans have no problem talking about the Second World War, but in a serious and respectful way (towards the victims, of course, not towards us Germans!). Jokes about such atrocities are out of the question. Imagine someone coming to the USA making jokes about slavery or the genocide of Native Americans?

The Germans that I have known were funnier than hell but you are correct, their humor is very dry and subtle a most people who are not German do not get it.

I lived in Dusseldorf for 16 years and had the best time ever. German people are the warmest, funniest people i know. You can talk about anything as long as its a two way street. My friends can offend as good as they get. Nicest people and friends for life. Vacation there in 4 weeks and I cant wait to go home.

Many years ago I was doing a project at Frankfurt Airport. The German guy at the airport I was working with hosted a meeting of other German department heads to explain the project. After the meeting I was completing my notes of the attendees, some of whom were only introduced and referred to by the last name. When I asked my counterpart for the first names of some people, he said he didn't know as he'd only been working with them for 20 years!

a good friend is German, the son of two German immigrants to the US. He has a great sense of humor and is a great guy all around. I did figure out why he has such a good sense of humor - both of his parents are funny as hell, and as nice as they can be.
