rat kings most likely actually forms in colder months when 3-30 rats huddle together for warmth, their tails have a grasping reflex which would've got them tangled in the first place. The longer they are tied together the more sticky substances get involved such as blood and urine, this will get them even more stuck together. it's called the rat king because eventually they will die one by one, the ones still alive feeding on the dead corpses until eventually the last rat to die is the rat king because he/she lasted the longest.

the last part of the fight is kinda sad when the other rat cliker separates he looks scared and runs from you so its kinda sad
