What's even more sad about this is that past Mike was even considering letting it go, before he ultimately decided to dwell in his failure and become bowler hat guy, then bowler hat guy just sealed his future by telling his past self to dwell in his failure and let hate fuel his actions.

You can tell that they really wanted Jim Carey to be the voice of Bowler Hat/Older Goob but either he turned it down or just couldn’t afford him. Either way, still an underrated movie

What's interesting about this scene is probably the fact how Goob really set his own path. Kid Goob was sad, but to some extent, knows it wasn't entirely his fault and had a fair chance of moving on. At one point he even said, 'My coach said I should let it go .. maybe he's right.'
If it wasn't for Future Goob's intervention; telling his past self to never move on, and instead keep the hatred, let it fester and boil etc, Goob would have ended up fine. Goob, simply said, created a time paradox.

Lewis managed to change his future by waking him up and he managed to catch the ball. After he got adopted he probably became a famous baseball player in his adult years.

There's a reason the main tagline in the movie is KEEP MOVING FORWARD. Whereas Lewis did that despite his own failures and became a world renowned engineer, Goob became a total loser because he just can't let things go.

As someone who was bullied a lot when he was a kid and very recently got punched in the face by a complete stranger for no apparent reason, I can tell you this, letting go of that feeling of anger and fighting off that dark desire to right every personal injustice can be extremely difficult, both as a child and as a adult, so a scene like this one hits me very hard, also while it is arguably the wrong advice, I do appreciate that the Bowler Hat Guy did take the time from his revenge plot to try to cheer his younger self up, even if his advice was the wrong one here.

I was almost 17 when I saw this film, and immediately after this scene, all the gears turned in my head, and I realized that Bowler Hat guy was future Goob, and Cornelius was future Lewis.
