What an excellent conversation. Thanks, Jacob and Maggie!

History is about facts, and there should never be any attempt by historians to sugarcoat historical truth to mollify religious conservatives of any persuasion.

Its pretty obvious it never happened. There would be some kind of evidence of people being there for 40 years. Also on its face it makes no sense. Did they just walk in a giant circle? You could cross the Sinai 100 times in 40 years.

Our image of what happened was fashioned by Cecil B.DeMille, a Hollywood Film maker. In 1978, when a reporter remarked to President Anwar Sadat about the significance of the country of Israel giving the land back to Egypt after it was annexed in 1967 war, Sadat stated unequivocally, that the Egyptians have no record of Israel's enslavement in their land.

I'm a non practicing roman Catholic. Born, raised and went to Catholic schools and universities all my kife. When i was in highschool i asked my theology teacher who wrote the bible. He said the bible was the word of God written by men inspired by God. I didn't question that back then, but it stuck with me and when I got older i realized that what my teacher told me is akin to saying that the bible is the same as fiction. I still believe in God, but I just can't believe in any man made religion. I've realized that you can have a more personal relationship with God without having to sign up for any religion

If someone said "there is no historical or archaeological evidence that Yu the Great ever existed" would the Chinese be offended? Would they feel attacked? I understand that this might be an unfair comparison but if you have based your cultural identity in a religious story, that's not historians' fault.

I heard a 1970's lecture from Dr. Ben that stated there were no Jews in ancient Egypt and that ancient Egypt was built by paid laborers not slaves. He also stated that it was the entry of the Hyksos during a famine that led to warring in Egypt when the Hyksos recruited Assyrians to help takeover northern Egypt. Apparently that portion of Egypt had no standing army. The Hyksos took the captured Egyptian POW and sold them into slavery outside of Africa. Dr. Ben reported that the Hyksos were ancestors of the people who became the Jews. Eventually the Hyksos were pushed out by Egyptians to the south and neighboring African nations. Supposedly the Exodus is about the barbarian Hyksos being run out of Egypt. The Hyksos didn't leave empty-handed. They stole gold from Egypt's treasury.

This history is all about understanding how a people created a religious cult, like many other people, generating a god that puts them in a chosen role. What’s amazing is that so many still believe these fabricated myths: Zeus is dead…sorry.

When I visited Egypt in 1988 the Egyptologist at the time on my tour told us, when I asked about this Exodus, that there is no record of this mass exodus from Egypt. The Ancient Egyptians wrote everything down but there was no record of this. Anyone who entered Egypt was eventually Egyptian ( it was called Kemet back then)
He also said, that Arabs conquered Egypt in the 6th Century AD. The history of Egypt dates back 5, 000 years. Very interesting how clever people can manipulate history!

Who would have guessed that ancient human traffickers won't fabricate their history to act like victims. That's wild.

I was saddened when Dr. Bryson said she was accused of being an antisemite because of her findings.

The land of Canaan was under Egyptian control the whole time. How could the Israelites have entered the land of Canaan without the Egyptians knowing? How would they have escaped? They would have crossed the Red sea and met an Egyptian garrison. The only thing I can say is that it happened on either a much smaller scale or the story was fabricated with the Hyksos expulsion.

We should not be forced to believe in a myth to avoid hurting people. If anyone thinks a myth is part of their identity, they should check their sanity. Every nation has origin myths, but they don't call historians anti-xxxx just because they say this is just a myth, it did not happen in history. We cannot treat them as historic events just because those people want to believe in the myth.

The Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years. And my parents walked to school every day, rain or shine, heat wave or blizzard. Five miles. Uphill both ways.

Of course the Exodus was nonsense.
Wandering the desert for 40 years to travel a distance you could walk in a couple of days.
Appearing in the Bible, a work of fiction, reinforces that fact.

I have no problem with people honoring their own mythologies and making those myths central to their identity, but I am under NO obligation to accept that mythology as true. Someone arguing that I must accept THIS mythology as history will I promise you NEVER insist I accept Norse mythology, or Aztec mythology as history as well. lol.

A sterling example of what hosts are supposed to do. Invite someone who can speak in depth on a subject and let them do just that.
