What size chain ring works for a 1X drivetrain?

You may have noticed that there isn't much information about which chainring size will work best with your 1x drivetrain. Single rings don't increase the need for rear derailleur capacity, so as long as the chainring and crank are compatible with your frame, you can use whatever size chainring you want.

There are frames that have maximum tooth size for sure. You might hit the chain stays

I have a 44T on my 1x9 with 11-21 cassette. It’s an old Rockhopper. Works perfect for my needs.

Would be amazing for fixie set up if you can have a 1x2 or 1x3 for hills, flat roads, and mixed terrain set up.

I had this problem when I was building my bike, the manual has indicated that the maximum chain capacity is 41 so, I thought that's the max teeth for the chainring, but then I realized that's only the case if you have a 2/3x setup. LOL

My bike came with the classic 34 teeth non-NW in the front and the cheapest Shimano 11-42 megarange 7 speed in the back.
Wanted something better so first of all, I ordered the Hollowtech II system with a 36 teeth and wanted the 8 speed 11-32 or 11-34 in the back, but one day i just went "Fпck it" and started riding only the hardest gear cog in the back with the seat all the way down and revoshifter taken off. Yesterday I have finally assembled the new drivetrain with a 30 teeth NW in the front, a singlespeed kit of 13 teeth in the back and a wide singlespeed chain.
So yeah, now I'm riding a rigid 27.5 XC bike like a giant BMX and if I get a chance to choose between my stupidly uncanny setup and a proper street bike, I'd take mine!
Considering building a dirt jumper as well (just to look like a sane human being and to see if it's any more convenient)

So, since microSHIFT is here, I want to know what is a good chainring size for the AdventX in mountainous areas? What size is best to ensure I can climb hills, and pedal with force down hills?bi am planning on buying an AdventX this spring.

We’ve had a fat bike for riding on snow but, with a 44T ring, it can hardly climb anything steep. Right off the top of your head, how many chain links should one remove for going to a 34T ring?
