Eating healthy sounds easy, but shopping healthy can be challenging. Health experts say the rows of food choices in the grocery store can be tempting distractions from a healthy diet.
Julie Hill, a registered dietitian with Lee Memorial Health System, says before you go to the store make sure you have a list. “I always recommend shopping the perimeter of the grocery store first. Typically if you start off in the produce section you get all your produce for the week, all of your fruits and vegetables for each dinner, each meal, each snack.”
Buying for the week can also help you make better eating choices during the week. Having healthy snacks and lunches on hand will keep you from fast food lunches and vending machine snacks. “Definitely looking for those healthy snacks and things that we can carry with us is important,” said Hill.
Before you buy, Hill says take time to read the labels. “Just reading the back and looking for the positive nutrition that you’re getting out of it. Are you getting whole food ingredients where you can read the ingredient and know what it is, verses chemicals that might be added?”
After you buy, make sure you follow through with your healthy purchases. Hill suggests making lunch and packing snacks the night before. She says shopping healthy will not only help you save money on food, it will also help you stick to your healthy diet.
