Someone asked a great question: If God is pure act and cannot change, then how can he do anything? Wouldn't that be a change? There is a distinction between active and passive potencies. Passive potentiality is the ability to be changed (passively). Active potentiality is the ability to cause change in something else. Creation is an act of God. God being pure act can actualize potencies in other things. The creation is not a change as nothing was in actuality and then different after a process of becoming. It was just new being.

When God acts on things already in existence, he is causing change in those beings. This is an active potency rather than a passive one. The first way denies passive potency in God, not active potency.
