You are just so right! Having worked with Epson for MANY years, I've done with them now for the exact reason you mention. Now with Canon, I'm not looking back :-)

Had a very similar experience with a Epson P9000. It developed a streak in the black channel that would not go away and it would not stop wasting ink. Despite turning off auto print head cleaning and multiple firmware updates it just kept on gobbling up ink and waste tanks. Never again.
We now run a HP Designjet Z9 with user replaceable print heads. Brilliant!

I agree 100%. Used to be an Epson man, but because of constant clogging... now a Canon man never looking back

TOTALLY agree. Was an Epson guy for years, as an amateur I loved being able to just print my own, tho sporadically. I WASTED MORE INK & PAPER than I'd ever imagine because of clogged nozzles. I had to do a test print & usually clean EVERY time I wanted to use it. I finally, at least 5 years ago, bought a Canon Pro 4000 - AND IT HAS NEVER LET ME DOWN!!!! It monitors itself flawlessly every time I turn it on, every print, no hiccups (unless it's firmware or software upgrades w/ new Mac OS versions). And yes, the peace of mind that user installed print heads offers is righteous.

Welcome to the club. When, a few years ago, I was going to (I thought) have the printhead of my 17" Epson printer replaced, the quotation was around the same as the price for a new printer. I'm awaiting delivery of my 44" Canon printer in a couple of weeks. In this country, the price includes installation and setup plus a 3 year on-site warranty. Easy choice.

I am only a Hobby photographer but I own a 20 year old Epson 7600 and until 1 week ago a 3880. The 7600 is primitive and slow and indeed the head sometimes get clogged up. However giving it a few days and some cleaning cycles I still manage to make great prints with it. I can also repair it myself since it is old technololgy.
For my day to day prints I had an 3880. Unfortunately it died recently after many many years of usage.
I have been looking for a replacement but the P900 felt so flimsy, and people seem to have lots of mechanical paper feed issues with it.
I got a great deal on a Canon P1000. That thing is build like a tank. It feel that it will serve me well for the next 10 years

As a keyboard specialist who prints business documents in a typewriter service-like base, I appreciate Canon [color laser] printers. I am proud to also mention that I print documents and files on laser paper. When my last ream of store brand paper is finished, I intend to switch to a famous brand like Hammermill. I wish you the best of success when your Canon Pro-4600 arrives to work for you all the way. Happy digital drawing! 👍

The company I work for bought two large format Epson printers in 2005. A 7800 and a 9600. About a year ago the 7800 stopped working. Luckily the 9600 being 44” wide, I can still load the 24” wide rolls on it when needed.

I've been printing on an Epson P6000 for about seven years, still does a great job but, it runs so many cleaning cycles. I'm not a high output printer so that may be why I haven't had any issues with the print head yet, but glad to know that might be an issue in the future.

There's no good reason that such huge pieces of equipment shouldn't last for decades and be serviceable. Unfortunately this mindset has been lost.

I thought I was alone. Had the same problem with 2 Epson desktop inkjet printer the most recent being the Surecolor P600. One inkjet completely failed this past week. The good people at B&H suggested I contact Epson and ask for an ink cartridge replacement. Epson refused & referred me to an authorized repair center, almost 2 hours from my home. Forget it .. the cost to repair isn't worth it & for what would have cost Epson probably $15 - $20 to make me happy, they lost a loyal customer for life. I'm moving on to Canon as well.

Thanks for confirming my decision & best of luck with your new printer !

Solid rant. I gave up after six Epson printers, each with its own problems. One couldn't manage paper transport, another bled ink (literally), another just couldn't get the colors right no matter what I did. Another was perpetually clogged. I probably printed more nozzle patterns than photos. And so on.
I've been using a Pro-1000 for almost three years, and not once has it given me anything but repeatable, solid results.
If I make any changes to the image, it will show up in the print. Maintenance is a snap, and the ink set is great.
And I find it to be excellent on ink.
Here's a tip: never turn off the machine, or let it turn off (go to the settings to change this), and it won't perform an ink dump every so often.
In these 30 months with the Canon, I'm on my (almost) fourth ink set, and I print nearly every day.
Saving up for a 2600 now.

Actually saw this yesterday on my TV but making comments there is a chore. I do have a photo printer. It is an older Canon i9900. It was a great printer. However, they decided to obsolete it by not updating drivers and software when windows went to Windows 10. I did get it working with the windows 7 driver but the software is somewhat erratic. Obsolescence is the key to the marketing strategy of most of these printer companies. I don't use a big printer like yours so I don't have that experience. However, on the smaller ones I have always preferred the Canon to the Epson.

Exactly right I busted the head on my Epson R1800 years ago and couldn't repair it, they wanted as much for the head that it cost for a new printer. so I now have three Canon printers with removeable heads for cleaning or replacement which takes just a few minutes and works great.!

Said goodbye to Epson about 18 months ago when I moved to the Canon Pro-1000. Certainly not in the leagues of your large format stuff, but have been extremely happy with it. Yes, it uses a lot of ink, yes it's expensive, but it actually works when I need it to. Wish I would've moved on years ago.

Same experience we’ve had to throw away several Epson printers. Have similar issues with 2200’s and 600’s (super-B). Unless you use them routinely they dry out and you burn hundreds of dollars in ink getting rid of clogged heads.

I'm by no mean a pro; barely even a hobbyist. I bought 3 Canon print heads for my home Canon printer over a decade of owning it. I felt like I could sneeze and it would break, but it was also really nice that I could just buy a new print head.

Last year I ended up going with a tank-based printer however, and gave away my Canon.

I bought an ET-8550 Epson eco-tank, and while I'm very happy with it, I also realize the print heads, when they go, will make the printer garbage. I hope that since it uses a different print head technology, one that supports sublimation even, that it will be tougher than the Canon print heads.

We'll see though. You make a great point about print head replacements, but every manufacturer has their own annoying quirks.

I have been printing on my Epson 9890 for 10 years, in nearly daily use, I replaced the print head once about 5 years ago, I bought it from China and it took me 30 mins to change it after watching a YouTube video. I print on everything from 350 gms to handmade Japanese Gampi tissue. Yes I have had my share of clogged heads but a few cleaning cycles and I am back in action. This is my third large format Epson and won’t be my last. Maybe I have just been lucky but I think they are great machines. My only experience with canon printers was a negative one.
