My theory for story #2 is that Jake's parents told him to try and lure Luke into the woods so that they could kidnap him. There's little basis for this, but it's the direction my mind wandered to.

The story about Jake the "imaginary friend" was heartbreaking to me. As a parent myself I know that when your child has an imaginary friend, you ask to meet said friend to make sure that they are actually imaginary! Plus the fact that neither parent ever even thought to check the tree house is insane to me. Even if there was no imaginary friend, that is something that a parent should be doing to make sure that their child hadn't brought anything potentially dangerous into the tree house or just to check the conditions of it. When he came home with a black eye and their son told him that Jake had done it, their first reaction was to say that he was lying???!!! Obviously an imaginary friend would not be able to physically hurt their son. So unless their son was prone to lying (which the author didn't mention) you should believe your son instead of punishing him! Then when the father actually finally went into the tree house and saw all of that stuff his first go to was that his son had collected all of that stuff?! Seriously?! Unbelievable! Also the mother thought that it might be some kind of entity is insane! Entities don't wear shoes that can be left behind! It was most likely a homeless child. It's possible that it could be a backwoods family. To me that seems unlikely though. I would be embarrassed if I was the father even telling that story knowing how cruel he was to his son.
